A v ' ^ ' ;
Gentlemen.?I observe in your paper of yester- i
day, .mr nomination for the United States Senate.
I feel sincerely grateful for the kindness implied |
in this nomination, but I am constrained to de- '
alin'o entering into competition for this distinction. |
. I an entirely satisfied with the position I now i
hold as one of the Representatives of the people. ,j
Its sphore of usefulness is sufficiently ample. In- ^
deed, the Tariff, the most important of all subjects,
, after the slavery question, peculiarly appertains t
lb the House of Representatives, and as it is my
ardent desire to contribute to the ultimate tri- j
umph of the great cause of Free Trade, absolute
and unlimited, attainable only by direct taxation, (
I feel that my place of present usefulness is the ! 1
popular bravch of the Government. i 2
"* I might pause here, but the interest I feel in j
) the subject its one of the people, induces me to say j
more, l consider tfiis me most important uieu- v
tion for the Senate ever had in this State since the p
formation of the Government I shall not dwell
npon the desirableness of preserving the prestige
of the State for intellect. Wo all fed this.- I rise
to higher ground. The condition of public affairs;
Kansas slipping from our grasp, Walker decreeing,
freedom by infinite argument of manifest ?
destiny and "cold winds from the mountains," F
the'Administration voiceless as the grave, the dem- F
ocratic party, North, jubilant. I
Surely, if danger .ever necessitated wisdom of c
action, it is now. i-earnestly .'hope, therefore, ^
fbat the action of the State may be ef the wisest. 8
Public opinion in. Soulbi Carolina has always, 8
hitherto, in great emergencies, risen to theirievel. *
I tfuat it will do sp now, and that the high mis- J
si on of Senator may be conferred under the exclu- c
aire influence of great considerations of public in- ?
terest. Respectfully, ' c
. ' , - '. * . W. W. BOTCE. ?
bat Erskine could not have spared mm. It is bat
just to say that his same was before the Board
without his knowlsge entirely. .

Affair.-?Last night the -Fnlton E
House, in.this city, was the theatre of the most I
awful tragedy that ever occurred in the annals of 1
crime. About a quarter past 8 o'clock a young 0
m?n, twenty years of age, named William Witcher,
shot his father, Mr. D. H. Witcher?the ball en- j
tering the left hjpocondriac with a tendency up- T
ward of forty degrees, passing through the stom- j
ach and left lobe of the liver, lodging near the .
spine; We are informed that William, afterdating
supper, drank two glasses of brandy?his
father took him into the room to reprimand him* *
for drinking, when William drew his pistol and 0
deliberately shot his father. We left Mr. Witcher g
at half-past nine?he was not then dead, but suffering
the most excruciating agony. William immediately
effected his. escape. The police were
v on his track, at ten o'clock. Without farther com- =
ment we await the result

What Uncle Sam has Done.?The following
contrast is felicitously noted by the Brooklyn Ea- \
gU: ' - < . J
"Uncle Sain after carrying on business for the g
. past eighty years, Laving three-wars, baying ter- j
ritoiy'from France and Mexico, building railroads,
speculating in a bank, and trading with all crea*.
tion, coitaes out with a snug little balance on hand
of $22,000,000," endugh to get up several million- ^
aires, and which makes Uncle Sam a millionaire "j
among nations. Sinoe"our revolution England has J
quadrupled her national debt, and other nations of n
Europe have ran up a score nearly in proportion, t
while Sam has paid off his debts, bought real e
estate, and has money laid by for a rainy day. a
Largest Man in the World.?The funera^ <
Bermon of Mr. Miles Darden, who died at hi9 resi- i
dence, in Henderson county, will be preached on *J
the 4th Sanday in this month, five miles South a
west from Lexington, Tennessee. The Masonio j
fraternity will be in attendance, in full regalia, on c
the occasion. y
'The decesased was, beyond all question, the c
largest man in the world. His height was seven j
feet six inches?two inches higher than Porter, the
celebrated Kentucky giant. His weight was a
fraction over one thousand pounds It required seventeen
meu to put him in his coffin. Took over" ]
100 feet to make his coffin. He measured around
the waist six feet and four inches.
A Den of Gamblers Surprised.?Our friend,
Co'.. J. D. Williams, brought to jail, on Sunday f
last, four white men whom he had .caught that
morning gambling with his negroeB. We are not I
disposed to excite the public against these men, I
but as a public journalist wedeem it just to give E
our approbation of any act that has a tendenoy to p
remove the many pernicious practices and demer- I
alizing influences that are at this time thrown in a
the path of oar negroes. Col. Williams deserves n
the approbation of the whole community for acting
thus promptly and fearlessly in this case. As the
matter will undergo legal investigation, we
think it proper not to publish the circumstances,
although we have them from the Colonel himself,
and there can be no doubt of their correctness. ,

Complimentary.?At the recent meeting of the d
Board of Trustees of South Carolina College, we ti
understood Prof. Patton of Erskihe College recei- ti
red a flattering vote for the chair of Grecian Literature.
If the Board had known him as we know a
him, he would have been elected unanimously.? C
We are glad, for Erskine's sake that he was not I
elected. Prof. P. is a graduate of the South Ca- n
rolina College, and we presume, in his department, 91
is equal to any man in the South. His Alma Mater
would have done well to have obtained him;

Cotton.?Our Inst weekly report of the cotton
narket closed on a good demand for the article, at
trices ranging from 10@13}cents. In the early
inrt of the week now under review, the market
tresented no new feature, and the little'that was
iffered was freely taken at very full prices. Qn
Wednesday, the news from Liverpool by the Peria
to the 18th instant came to hand, reporting an
ctive demand-for cotton, at an advance of |d. on
brnier quotations, with sales for the week of 75,KX)
bales, including 18,000 to Speculators and 8,*00
to exporters, and leaving a stock on hand of
187,000 bales, of which 527,000 bales are Amerian.
These accounts bad a favorable effect on our
oarket, and prices of all descriptions advanced ?
m our last quotations. The transactions of the
reek have been on a very limited scale, simply
rom the fact that there is very little offering.?
Ye now quote: Inferior 10J@10J ; ordinary 10J

Bacon.?We have nothing new to report in the
>acon market, and we can only say that a choice
article of country cured bacon would freely comnand
16 cents.
Corn.?There is a fair stock of this article on
he market, and prices are looking down. We
tow quote $1.20?$1.25 ^ bushel.
Peas.?There is almost no peas in the market,
md they would freely command $1.80@$1.35
lushel. " - '
Flour.?The Roar market is well supplied, and
trices are sinking. We qnote $7@$7J for oomnon
to good brands ; superfine $7.60 ; and extra

PRESS FOR SALE,
?m/? have received instructions from the owTT
ner, Mr. ROBINSON, to sell the PRINCETON
PRESS recently used in our office, at very
cheap rates. We exchanged this Press for a new
machine (a Princeton Press of larger dimensions)
at a merely nominal cost; and we can assure our
ootemporaries that it was laid aside for no fault
whatever. The Bed measures 44 by 28 inches.
Mr. ROBINSON promises to put it up in good
working order, and to furnish it with his recent
valuable improvements; at a charge considerably
below the original cost. Our experience warrants
us in recommending it as the cheapest Press that
can be used in a flourishing country office; especiallv
so. as it is offered on accommodating terms.
