The Meeting To-Day. Neror before iu the history of Or nngcburg County was there such an crout as the one which calls her people together to-day. With sorrowing hearts do wc record ii. Rore peac * and tran >.-"'.? quility have watched over our destinies? atod wa have prospered. To day an ira |)unr? brings this pooj>le together that sorer had a place of lodgement in their hearts before. But aa we havn't the opacc to speak of it at length we will rest ourselves with these remarks: This meeting is to be no hot and fire eatiug affair. It must be one of cool and de liberate notion. If the people act right, great good will result to all from it. Wc Want every man to-day who attends it, to pledge his support to law and order. We want it to adopt a course that will protect and benefit all?white and black alike. We want uo bi'tcr partisan af fair, and the man that attempts to make it suoh will receive our heartiest con demnation. "Let the Law be Enforced." Under this heading our contemporary of the Columbia Cnion has an article, so much to the point, that we repro duce it. Like tho Lnion we think the time for soft talking nnd coaxing hns passed. It pains us to say .so, but it is nevertheless a truth. It is hard when right-minded Republicans bnvc done all they could to allay political excitement, that they should be threatened with death. It U hard whoa n man is d/iug all he can for the peace and prosperity of tho community iu which ho lives, to have his motives continually assailed *and misjudged. If this world were without sin, or rather were tho men that thus persecute others fur opinion's sake, without spot or without blemish them selves, then their course might be re garded at least as pardunublc. But we have known persons who tuuk advantage of circuujBtauces to "cut" and abuse gentlemen because of their political sen timents, who befurc two shades of poli tics were introduced into this State, they would have shunned as they would a leprous wretch, their defainers. Now men who ouco would not associate with Messrs So-and-so, who would not be caught introducing them into a fash ionable ballroom, arc talked of as "low down fellows" by these same suubb cd creatures. O temjwa! O Afore*! is a hackneyed newspapor phrase, but sometimes it Comes in nicely. This is one of tho places. But let us not di gress. We repeat that it is hard for those who have worked faithfully far the prosperity ot this people, to be per petually assailed by them as thieves nnd scoundrels. Wo nre perfectly willing that he that is without sin nmoug the disaffected, should curse to his heart's delight; but wc do modestly insist that those who live in glass houses be quiet ' ; When we say that (we have labored ? hard for Oraugehurg County,) we arc _ .-' - * ? *** -...?_ ? vuiiaaiis>ajV vsssw* *?ewe? va i.. Will not try to gainsay the assertion. Wc havo had charge of this journal now for nearly twelve months, nnd through all the discouraging and disheartcniug messages and intelligence;' that have reached our ears, wo have kept tho even tenor of our way. Republican but honestly battling for the right, we have tried to injure no man. This our ene mies will give ui credit for. Wc have steadily condemned corruption where evcr wc fouud it. Unskilled in that " journalism that would ever seek to hide tho shortcomings of its political confre ret, we have exposed wrong on every baud. And so has a majority of the leading Republicans iu this County. With them we have oouusclled peace and good order; and with them we arc striving to have for this Statu a better govern meat than it has bcou blest with aa a whole for tho past three or four years. But si! our efforts, and all the combined endeavors of both pirtics will ta*rendered wholly fmitlc&s, if lawless uess continues to receive the tacit ap proval that it has elicited throughout the State. Our province is to council peace, and order, nnd good government. Thn ihiv ?hm? aheso shall bless ua will only be prohmgod by outrages and wrongs. , We hove talked with si me oj the calmest minds in this County, and they thoroughly agreed with ua. And now wc ask : Will not every good oitt ten Tally to the ory of peace! Will not our leading men of both parties put their heads together nud try to devise some plau to avert the dread catastrophe which will as surely follow any acts of lawlessness that are perpetrated in this County, as night follows day. Wo arc in for ponce, and every endeavor of ours ahall be spent in the work of bringing it about. Here is tho articlo from the -Union. It is writtcu by one who has tho authority of knowing. Wo ask our well-thinking men to ponder it: "Every person who has read this journal during the past six uioutha oan bear testimony to our efforts to preserve the peace of the State, and bring to jus tice those guilty of offending against its laws. Wc have uevcr bceu sparing in our denunciations of the lawlessness and viol, nee which have prevailed in many sections of the State, uor have wo shown favors to political friends when guilty of any misdemcuuor or infringement of tho law. Set all our efforts havo proved fruitless, the oppositiou press often ac-1 cusing us of printing accounts of out rages solely for the purpose ol stirring up strife. Wo believe iu implicit obedience to law nud authority, cveu though these may be "hnoxious to us, and totally re pugudiit to our ideas of right and jus tice ; yet being laws they should be obeyed the same as if they met with our heartiest approval. Not 6o, however, with thoEo who have brought all this trouble upon us. Rather than live un der laws which they do not approve, and couform to rules nnd usages laid down by a lcgiblature uot of their choice, they would hcc everything go to ruin, the lives and property of citizens put in jeopardy, business stagnated, nud every iuduitry, except such as hhall pass their judgment, blighted and driven out of the Ttatc. This is the state of affairs which many of cur Democratic journals would like to 6eo, if we may judge by the stuff which appcurs in their columns weekly. If an outrage occurs iu any portion of the State, forthwith these partisan newspapers begiu to bent about for an excuse for the parties guilty of the crime. Instead of rallying to the support of law nnd order, and condemn ing crime by whoever it may be commit ted, they seek to palliate it, nnd to shield the guilty culprits from punishment. If a white Democrat abuses, whips, or mur ders, u poor colored man, it is decm?:d the height of persecution to bring the offender to justice, but let a colored mau so mncb as even insult a white Demo crat, and his lifo pays the pcualty. This is called justice. L*t a negro steal a pound of seed cotton, nnd six years in the penitentiary ia not deemed too great a punishment. The Demo cratic journals would never tiro of talk ing of tho crnormity of such a crime, but midnight murder by a band of masked villains is not of sufficient im portance to call for even a passing word of-condemnation. When a baud of an hunched or more of disguised men ride into town, warn the public officers to re sign their planes, and merchants to close up their affairs and leave tho State, these virtuous journals have nothing to Bay against such high-handed proceedings, but if two disguised burglars should break into a house at. tho North) forth with their columns would teem with ac counts of '-Ku Klux at the North," and such like trarh. The difference hclwccn the conduct of OOULUUIU L/Uiuuuiativ j-. ? . .. ? !.. ! ' 1 als of the North is very apparent. Whenever an outrage against law occurs in uny Northern Stute, tho press is never backward in denouncing it, no matter whether the parties be black or white, Democrats or Republicans. Here every thing is worked in tho interests of one I party. The luto raid into Orangeburg b}- an hundred more or loss, of disguised meu, hardly drew a protest from a siirgle Democratic journal, while somo of them even seek to cover up and hide tho of feupe. Wo have been desirous that peace an 1 quiet should prevail, in order that ? 'there might be no reason for the eaforcemcnt of tho Ku Klux law, but wc are now confident that nothing but the strong arm of tho United States ^Government will bring peace and order to tho Stute, und this we believe will (aoon be brought into requisition. Many persons iu the disaffected sections pro fess to prefer martial law to tho presout government, and to all such wc will say, the prospects uow are that you will soon have your preferences gratified. For bearanee has. ceased to be a virtuo, ami martial law in certain localities has be come ahnest a ueccsaity. We hope the National Government will use every means at it* command to preserve the peace In this Stute, and wilt enforce the Ku rtlux law to tbe very fullest extent. There is no uso in being moaly ESCUtUed about the?M? matter* anv longer. The first, duty of tho government is to protect the lives and property of its citi Eons and when a State government fail* to do this, it then becomes incumbent upon tho National Government to make good the defection. In North Carolina tho United States authorities are actively at work arresting li.ose scamps who tunke night hideous with their devilish transactions, and we have tho assurance that operations will soon commence horo. Tho first thing we want is an United States marshal who knows hta duty iu the promises, and knowing it has the courage to perform it. Such an one we must have, if it breaks every political slate in the State.*' Opik ?. F. Hutlcr, The Churlcatuu Coprttr in a long editorial on this gentleman, nud his chances for the gubernatorial chair of] Massachusetts, pays him tho following compliment: "General Butter has ttaiuod a notoriety which has made his name a familiar word in this country and through most of the civilized world. This notoriety will survive him many generations." Thai's the way we like to see justice meted out to u politic?1 enuiuy. Nkw Mascmc Ok?a.n.?Dr. A. G.
