A NOBLE SACRIFICE or The Three Friends of Van* Vilalue AN EPISODE OF THE LATE WAR. In tho mouth of July of this last fate ful year, there did not exist a more tran quil, sunny spat in all France than the little village of Vauz VilaioC. Very ru ral and primitive it was, and tho echoes from the great tumultuous world without came few and faint among tho green Golds and purple vineyards, where tho birds sang bo merrily and the summer winds sighed so softly thiongh the rust liug trees. It possessed several substantial farm houses among its humblest cottages, and a pretty little church, served by an old cure, who, in his broad hat and black sutane, walked b'revisfry irt band from house to house, and was a veritable fath er and friend to erory man, woman and child in the place. Tho population was en lively agricultural, and tho magnates of the village wore a few thriving farm ers, who sent their sorts to* the ctiro for a few hours daily leaching, which gave them some intellectual advantages above the vest of the jcuiicue of Vau* Vi laiuo. Among these farmers' sons were three young men about the same ago, who we're for some years under the good priest's tuition, arid Who had at that pe riod of their boyhood' contracted a friuu'd * ship for each other, which they had pre served intact through the years that had intervened since ib'c'ri. Sunday, the 10th of July, 1870, was a and when tho benodictiotr service, at which tho cure generally gave his people a little address, was finally ovor that eve ! ning, those three young men?Mart el Lcpcketicr, Jules Des ma rots aud Rossel ?sauntorcd away to a large tree Which stood in a retired part of tho churchyard, I aud throw themselves down under its spreading branches to enjoy tho soft evening air, whilo thoy conversed togeth- j cr in free ami happy coubMenco. Now, their talk was of the future; it is not ofton of anything else with most of us in thoso hopeful days of youth, when tho unknown life is full of golden possi bilities, aud no shadow from failure or disappointment has dimmed! the snnshiuc which expectant fancy shads ou all that is to come. "How gloomy the bo* j^rc was in his sermon to-uightl" said AI artel, a stal wart youth, with bluo eyes and curling fair haif, and a bright, frank exprossii n of fuce ; "he could talk of nothing but tho uncertainty of lifo, and tho neeesaity uf pre.pit iug ourselves for all sorts of possible trials and troubles.
