Directly after Governor Scott sent 3 last anuual message to the General J^fhbly; an editorial appeared in this paper com mending him for the stand he had taken, and for the promises made ^?ft?'tFfcole'.people of our State in that document. At that time, however, a different spirit pervaded the- Press of le State, and our views and commenda tions of Governor Scott, were concurred in only by a few papers. We thon said that tho Executive* of our State inten ded to carry out in good faith the pledg hq had made. But that prejudiced spirit, which has. so long been the curse of our land, urged our peoplo to doubt tho car/y?ug qut.of any promises that emanated from a Republican, They would . not bejieVe what the plain drifts of vents, however powerful in their course, pointed out. But as we said then, and repeat again' to-day, the future will work cue ssa render praise im to him to whom praise is duo. -Governor Scott to-day receives the commendations of tho entiro jpress of our State. Had aay one six months ago attempted to foreshadow this circumsiance in the history of our country, as one that would transpire, he would have been deneuricod. Now, howevor, it is a common thing to hear moo spoak in praise of him whom it were a crime in the eyesof a certain socie ty not long ago. to commend. Governor Scott's special message, and his firm op position to Martial Law. in'time of peace, is worthy of the plandits of all law-abid ing and peace loving citizens. And that opposition is firm. Also, his strong stand against corruption and a further increase of taxation, is commendatory and lenders him an object or admira tion for every citizen, except perhaps now and then an extremist to whom no plan that is honest and conservative in its tone is satisfactory.' But let Govern or Scott not relax his energies, and his d itcrmiuation to lighten the burden of j taxation under which our peoplo now la bor. He will receive the thanks and support of all who are decent and re spectable. That alone should guard him on to grander. strides in his promises of ] retrenchment and roform. ' In connection with the above it'may not be out of place to say that had Gov ernor Scott yielded to the wishes ot the few hot heads tfho desired him to de clare Martial Law in tho up-country, before to-day some of the bloodiest eoencs would have been enacted upon the soil of South Carolina, that evert convulsed a people in time of peace. But wiser heads and wiser impulses in fluenced the Governor, and the conse quence is that peace and order aro being restored in the up-couutry faster than wo hoped for. Just tho other day, in telligence reached Columbia in relation to now Klu Klux resolutions and out rages, but they all appeared to. have been committed by men not of this State The Governor will do all he can to havo tho offenders arrested, and i? his efforts to euforce the civil law, will receive the assistance of all honest men, white and colored. That was a wise decision of Governor Scott against sending the Militia to the up-couptry. We commend him for it. Tliq Barqwell Sentinel had a blood and thunder editorial in its colunms a few days ago. Our brother of the Co lumbia jjnion thereupon waxes warm, and handles said Sentinel pratty rough ly. fit declares that such journalism is a "disgrace to civilization." France has fallen. The trans-Atlao things of the past. Some rumors nre to the effect that the emissaries of the cx Emperor are busily at work in trying to bring about his restoration. And it is further hinted that King William lends a willing Car to tho idea. But ?whether or not iho Fr?-ucl? people will BiiffejP this insult we are unablo to say, though such an indignity ought to be spurned by them. And our owe Legislature came very near making the same consummate blun der. Had not Judge Vernon resigned wheu he did, tho tax payers of this Stato would have had about seventy five or a hundred thousand dollars to pay. Hut he resigned. Iu this Judge Vernon has provod himself to bo, if not better, nt least as good a friend to the Stato as tho Legislature. Mr. Earle of Greenville is spoken of] for his place. This gentleman is a tal ented lawyer, and would fill tbe position made vacant by Judge Vernon with credit to himself and honor to the State. We know Mr, Earle, and hope he will bo elected. There is an irrepressible and standing candidate for every va cancy that occurs upon tbe Judical bench; (and he doesn't live a thousand miles from here cither,) but whether or not the aforesaid irrepressible opposes Mr. Earle, still in our opinion he will have no opposition. Wo arc guided in this.by history, i. e., the history of re cent events ; and tho manner in which some candidates have been ouubbed by our Legislature. Who is that? Governor Scott is strenuously op posing all measures of extravagance con templated by n few scoundrels in the Legislature. Ho has even vetoed some bills. All honor to him I The "Woman Suffrage Mov: ment is going right ahead. A few weeks ago an organization for the advo cacy of the idea, was organized in Co lumbia. Govcra?r Scott was elected President. But the most striking signs of its progress, is, that the Daily Repub lican of the 16th ultimore, devoted a column and a half of closely printed editorial matter to the furtherance of the movement, and the Charleston Courier almost the .-ame space against it. Well, to he short, what the former of these journals advocates, is always in the liuo of progression, and the hitter's advoca cies invariably to tho contrary. 'For ourselves, we are hand in hand for tho movement in the abstract, but a practi cal application of the idea just now in South Carolina, in our opinion, will not work so well. Any how, wo shall not oppose it. Any thing for progress, es pecially that.of woman. There are five or six Divorce Bills before the Legislature. Heavens! can it be, as we heard a gentleman say the other day, that each of the supporters of these bills will bo the first to apply to our courts for divorces after the law is made? We cannot think so. Surely all of them have't made bad selections! If so, let them griu and bear it. We should, if we wore married. The New York Sun has got into tho real sensational lino. Fiuding that its rea ders were sick and tired of Charles A Dana's abuse of President Grant, be cause forsooth, he, tho President, would not join tho aforesaid editor of the Sun in some of his corrupt propositions, Dana turns his attention to South Car olina. He finda one Hogget and some others too, who are perfectly willing to join him in his attempts at defaming honest men, Wo allude to the devilish story published iu tho Sun a few days ago in relation to that assassination plot in which these infamous and unscrupu lous scoundrels, Hogget and bis crowd, allege that Governor Scott had a haud. Heretofore wc hnvo thought the story too absurd to notice, but we have chang ed our mind, and publish that if our readers 'just knew this man Dana, of the New Yo k Suv, and the crowd that he hus picked up to assist him in defaming a Governor who is doing all he can for oar people, they would unhesitatingly pronounoe tho whole a lie.
