Now roil the Test.?The State Kxecutivo Committee has acted wisely and properly, we think, io calling a convention to meet at Columbia August 13th to determine the question of q State primary. All three of the candidates for Governor have declared their preference for that method of e'eciiou 1 and every Democrat Ought to bo willing to , % accept it. < This action will givo us a kind of n cam- ! pvign within a campaign. Before wo come 1 11 vole on the question of whether Till- t man, Earle or Bratton shall bo Govori? r we 1 will vote on the question ef whether we will elect our delegates by the old convention system or by regular and general prim..ry election. Somo of Tillman's friends oppoie the primary on the ground that he already has con- ] trol of the party machinery and can be j elected by conventions ; but the party ma- | cninery is just what he has been telling the 1 preple is the instrument of tbo oligarchy 1 and aristocracy from 'which thoy should 1 break away, and wo do not see how the pes- * pie are to gain aoythiug by simply transfer- ' ring the alleged oligarchy from the politi- f c'aos who are now io te the politicians who 1 are now out. Liberty and solf government 1 is what Tilhnan says they want but does not seem over anxious to give them and what tat think they want and would like to sco I hem have. ( If tho Tillman side is afraid to trust its r chancos to the people the people should re- f pudiate and crush it. If that side is wil'ing i to trust the people let it como in and favor primaries so that we may have a fair, square, straight vote on who shall bo Governor. As the call for the convention lo nominate candidntvs on the lOih of September is reaffirmed, the convention in August will not 1 nominate, or if it does, its nomination will amount to nothing. ?
