A committee was appointed to nominate officers and report, next morning. Wednesday the convention was called to order by the Chairman of tlio Kxecutive Committee, devotional exercises bv Uev. T. II. I,. Vass then look the chair and after calling for a list of delegates ho asked for reports from the counties. Tticso were, in the main, encouraging The two counties which arc considered the poorest in the Statu, Horry and Lexington, reported their schools in most nourishing condition. This was certainly very creditihle, particularly in Ihccase of Horry, which is far distant from railroads nnd colleges. This, the uipsl remote county from the place of the Convention, was fully represented by active, energetic, earnest delegates. The lirst siibiect the object and aims of Sunday Seho il Work ? was discussed by Itev. A. W. Lamar, who was followed by several others in pointed *iml pertinent remarks. Relations of the .Sunday School to tlie Church and Family?was opened by lie*. T. II. Law, who clearly defined this relation, which exists between the Church ami School. Speech would follow speech in rapid succession, and many valuable suggestions were made. Thursday morning a better audience was in attendance. New Delegates were on hand. Many good talks were made. One feature of the addressee was thai they were short, no one exceeding fifteen minutes. The attention of the vi>iitors to the Convention for three hours was a marked compliment to those who were talking. It was evident that the delegates had come to toy via do their work belter when they returned home. Alt tne delegates were aui.t Sunday School men. A Fatal Kcrosono Accident. A small colored girl, daughter of Rachel Turner, was so dreadfully burned on Thursday last that she died in great ngotiy on the following Sunday- Coroniy fijxer held an inquest on the body, which elicited the following facts : The child's mother was away from home, sonic miles, and had left the little girl and a baby in charge of an aged colored woman. The latter was in the garden, sonic distance from the house when she heard the child's screams. On going toward the house she found the girl lying l>y a fence, enveloped in flumes and in great agony. It seems that the child attempted to make a fire and finding some live coals in the fire place poured kerosene oil upon them from the oil can. Of course the oil blazed up and caught that in the can and an explosion took place, setting lire to her clothing. The Cotton CropWe took much pains on Monday last to til* <|iiirc of the Farmers who were in town, as to the true conditiox of the cotton crop, ami almost every one tol l us that they cotild not possibly make more than half a crop, while many sail I they wonhl not make that. The weed has grown rapidly since the rains, but has not put on fruit. Many inform us that a very large ntimhet; of good sized -talks did not have more than four bolls on them, with a few blooms and no sipiares. The weed looks well, and a person passing along the mad would say the crop was line ; but if they were to go into the field and examine it, they would find that appearances were very deceptive. We know this to be the case in a patch wi'.liiu (he corporate limits of this town. Nut only are the bolls scarce but most of them arc very small. Stokes' house, on Main Street, lay Mr. W. Miller, which we think is one of tinvery best jobs in town. The colors on the outside show great taste and are honestly put on. while the walnut and oak graining on the woodj work of the inside proves Mr. .Miller to be a ! i'm class workman.
