Every teacher has had his troubles with different text books; here we might compare experiments and be of mutual aid. Our County Commissioners can meet with us and give any necessary instructions in reference to the workings of our public schools. The following extract from the present incut of tho grand jury of l'ickeus County sets forth the true condition of affairs in that region : White we believe that the nefarious business 1 of illicit distilling of intoxicating liquors is not carried on in this county to the extent that is currently reported, we are satisfied that some I persons on the border of the county arc, or have j been recently, engaged in it. We condemn all i illicit distilling as not only violative of the laws of the land, by defrauding the government of t the United States of its chief source of revenue, but as grossly demoralizing in its influence and < an unmitigated evil to society. Wo therefore present tlie business of illicit distilling as a nuisance that all good and law-abiding citizens should aid in abating. Pursuant to the instructions of your Honor, < we have enquired into the outrages alleged to 1 have been perpetrated by the United Stales rev- < cnuc olliccrs and deputy marshals, on peaceable 1 citizens of the county, who were not chargeable with any offense against the laws. We have not had sufficient time to prosecute our investigation of this matter to the extent which its importance demands; but sullicicut facts appear to satisfy | us, in addition to those within the knowledge of many of our members, that these olliccrs have for several years, committed t'se grossest outrages upon the persons and property of many of our law-abiding citizens, on the mere pretext or suspicion, without any legal proof whatever, that they were in some way connected with the illicit distillation or sale of intoxicating liquors. ' They iiave been seized under their own roof or while ploughing in their fields, and, without any warrant issued tor incir arrest, have been f inanacleil ami thrown into jail, where, after remaining several days, they have heen released, l on the ground that there was no evidence against them. These officers have searched private dwellings, hotli hy day and at night, without any search warrant ; and have, in several instances, _ beaten, kicked, and otherwise maltreated the J victims of their lawless conduct, who protested against the wrong thus done them. These ollicers are generally Northern men, of the class known as "Carpet-Haggcrs," of infamous character, but have associated with them a few of the lowest and most unprincipled persons of this community, who arc of notoriously had reptile throughout the county. As our citizens have heretofore appealed, in vain, to the courts for justice against the official wrong-doers, whose conduct is repugnant alike to law and civilization; they must, if the wrong is not remedied, assort their t ights as men, and as American citizens, by defending their lives and property with their own strong arms, against those who defy law while pretending to be engaged in executing it. C., April 1.?Inforuialion lias just reached here that a horrible murder was committed yesterday at l)oko, a station on the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad, a few miles above here. Mr. J. Rome had an altercation with his two sons, and both left the house. The elder son, William, returned in a short time, armed with a pistol, and shot his father in the head three times, killing him almost instantly. The niurdcjjgr_ has not yet been caught. At this critical moment the old gentleman sprang between the two disputants, and while attempting to arrest the bloody purpose of his son. received the hall from his son's pistol that was intended for Mr. Rlack, from the effects of which he died. ?
