Honesty is the best Policy.

a popular and distinguished gentleman, whose

helpless ; but that widow, inherited aline estate,
which she resolved to sell and pay the last
frauc of her dead husband's debts. Her Lawyer
and some of her friends, remonstrated with
her against this course ; as the property w is her
. owu, and not subject by law to her husband's
debts, and that she would suffer for the loss of
thosa enjoyments to which she had becu accustomed,
aud her sou would bu deprived of the
case, education aud social advantages which her
estate would afford. Her noble reply was,
no cloud of dishoucsty shall rest on my
husband's memory; no blush shall mantle the

retired to an humble cottage, devoted her time

heard of them ; and when the son attained manhood
years, society stretched forth its arms to
embrace him, honors and otliccs were heaped
upou him ; and before lie was middle nged, lie
had attained the highest places in the (Joverument.

those obligations, and to manufacture papers as

And how docs society regard these sons, as it
sees them to be?self degraded, drunkards,
liars, despised and contemned by all the virtuous
and respectable?respected by none, trusted
by none, their very faces deformed and distorted

County School Convention.
Atncng the many subjects that have been
brought before our people, for the past few
years, there has been none of more importance
than education. L do not propose to enter into
nil argument in favor of a theme which is so
generally accepted as good, but would like to
draw tlie atlentiou of the teachers of our county
the benefits of oMuinized labor in this fruitful

chilil, ami doubtless it would be well for us, the

It was my privilege to attend the last meeting
of the Spartanburg County Convention ; ami I
was then more convinced of the advantages accruing
froln an assemblage of the kind. Each
one. in a friendly way, suggesting the plans he
had found to succeed or fail and thus bringing
out tlie experiences of many, and each obtaining
ideas that, perhaps, would never have been suggested
in his routine of daily labor.
Every teacher has had his troubles with different
text books; here we might compare experiments
and be of mutual aid. Our County
Commissioners can meet with us and give any
necessary instructions in reference to the workings
of our public schools. If we can get the
movement on foot (and we .can, if we will) each
succcding meeting will he looked forward to
with more pleasure and will arouse to inorc active
exertions the community in which it is
held, producing a twofold benefit, to the teachers
and ueonle 1 ? *' *?"" "

Let some one, say the Kcv. A. A. James, our
school Commissioner, call a preliminary meeting,
at Union, of all the teachers desiring to enter
into the plan, at sonic convenient day ; and
there let sine place be selected for a mce'ing during
the snimer to perfect the organization. Let
us not be behind Spartanburg and some others
of our sister counties. TEACIlEll.
The Revenue Raiders.
The following extract from the present incut
of tho grand jury of l'ickeus County sets forth
the true condition of affairs in that region :
White we believe that the nefarious business 1
of illicit distilling of intoxicating liquors is not
carried on in this county to the extent that is
currently reported, we are satisfied that some I
persons on the border of the county arc, or have j
been recently, engaged in it. We condemn all i
illicit distilling as not only violative of the laws
of the land, by defrauding the government of t
the United States of its chief source of revenue,
but as grossly demoralizing in its influence and <
an unmitigated evil to society. Wo therefore
present tlie business of illicit distilling as a nuisance
that all good and law-abiding citizens
should aid in abating.
Pursuant to the instructions of your Honor, <
we have enquired into the outrages alleged to 1
have been perpetrated by the United Stales rev- <
cnuc olliccrs and deputy marshals, on peaceable 1
citizens of the county, who were not chargeable
with any offense against the laws. We have not
had sufficient time to prosecute our investigation
of this matter to the extent which its importance
demands; but sullicicut facts appear to satisfy |
us, in addition to those within the knowledge of
many of our members, that these olliccrs have
for several years, committed t'se grossest outrages
upon the persons and property of many of
our law-abiding citizens, on the mere pretext
or suspicion, without any legal proof whatever,
that they were in some way connected with the
illicit distillation or sale of intoxicating liquors.
' They iiave been seized under their own roof or
while ploughing in their fields, and, without
any warrant issued tor incir arrest, have been f
inanacleil ami thrown into jail, where, after remaining
several days, they have heen released, l
on the ground that there was no evidence against
them.
These officers have searched private dwellings,
hotli hy day and at night, without any
search warrant ; and have, in several instances, _
beaten, kicked, and otherwise maltreated the J
victims of their lawless conduct, who protested
against the wrong thus done them. These ollicers
are generally Northern men, of the class
known as "Carpet-Haggcrs," of infamous character,
but have associated with them a few of
the lowest and most unprincipled persons of this
community, who arc of notoriously had reptile
throughout the county. As our citizens have
heretofore appealed, in vain, to the courts for
justice against the official wrong-doers, whose
conduct is repugnant alike to law and civilization;
they must, if the wrong is not remedied,
assort their t ights as men, and as American
citizens, by defending their lives and property
with their own strong arms, against those who
defy law while pretending to be engaged in executing
it.

A Patricide.?Columbia, S. C., April 1.?Inforuialion
lias just reached here that a horrible
murder was committed yesterday at l)oko, a
station on the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta
Railroad, a few miles above here. Mr. J. Rome
had an altercation with his two sons, and both
left the house. The elder son, William, returned
in a short time, armed with a pistol, and shot
his father in the head three times, killing him
almost instantly. The niurdcjjgr_ has not yet
been caught.

Father Killed by his Son.?On Saturday
Inst Jesse Mitchum and his soil, in company
with Henry W. Rlack, were 011 their way home
from Rranchville, when young Mitchum and
Rlack became involved in a difficulty. The former
drew a pistol and attempted to shoot the
latter. At this critical moment the old gentleman
sprang between the two disputants, and
while attempting to arrest the bloody purpose of
his son. received the hall from his son's pistol
that was intended for Mr. Rlack, from the effects
of which he died. ? Colleton Democrat.
Suicide in Sumtku.?Sumter, Sunday, March
31.?(.'apt. F. J, Deschanips, a highly respected 1
citizen of this county, committed suicide at 1
Lynchburg yesterday, by deliberately shooting
himself in the head with a pistol. Financial
trouble was the cause of the deed.
