WE SHOILD BUSK NOBB STOCK IM TBK ROUTH. One of the great defects of the farm In^ practice of the Som h it? want of .iteotiou to ?tock of all kinds. Ou mat j places well adapted to rire raising of cattle, sheep, hog?, and horses, the farm work is doa-a by mules obtained frunj ahu ad ; the laborers are M on pork: produced in the West, the butter used by the family cornea from the gro? cer, thc cattle and sheep are poor, ill fed and neglected, and the hogs few and un t h ri tty tu comparison with what they should be. Our tunnels should understand that the great reliance tor the improvement of the soil is opon tbe stock of the farm Without stock, a sufficient supply of domestic manures cannot be made and the iartit will inevitably decline in fer? tility until its cultivation ceases to be profitable. Moreover, the farmer who tries it, will find that it is more profita ole to turn hi? surplus grain and roots into beef, pork, mutton, butter and a copious supply ot valuable home made manure, than to send it off to market at a heavy expense for transportation. These remarks are more especially ap? plicable to our upland* of moderate fertility. On rich alluvial lands and swamp-, prain is made in sufficient qualities to justify its sale. And in the iti'erior. wheat on improved Tot? i? g?nerally a good fanning crop Our farmers generally accept the principle thai it is not profitable to raise corn for market on their uplands, but they do not inquire sufficient ly into the questing-, whether on such land* crain may not be profi troly latr-ed for stock. In Europe they keep large herd and floeke by means of their fine meadows and pastures, and by raisins large quan tities of roots for winter feedinjr. By this mea ni they not only have the finest meat, bu' milk, butter, cheese, and Wool} and raise manure enough tn keep their lands up to the highest punt of productiveness We might adopt their system here with 6<>me modification, wiih grear advantage. There are m. better n tura I pinturea in the Union, than n ay be tottnd in the mountain districts of the South, as well as th '.?" below tide water, in the Kasfern pars As out winters are ?hort, rt will rcQit' Cumparati v? ly a stnail area to bc p' in root? and clover, i.nd other r -stS, to sur-port a large s'ock. The manure raised, instead of being appin ? to tram er<?pp. as in the old Countries a?.] in thc Northern Stares where the ay Mem has been tdopred lo some extent, should here be applied tn Cotton. 1 know from mv own expo ri'-nce. that o\en u;td?r the old syst m where the stork are allowed tn mn in the wood* during summer, and are t par in cly f? d d iring the winter, with the offai of the grain Crops sufficient manure ran be raised per hf ad to tunk" S 40U lb. bale of Cotton. If they were provided with good summer pastare*, and with plenty of hav and turnip? during i?" winter, the quantity of ma? nure would be incalculably increased. ati<i i> qualify tim? h enhanced The more mot crop*, there wnnld be dbe more stock; the more stock, the 'Aore manure; the inore manure the tutire cotton. There is now an awakening among the agriculturalists, of the South to the necessity of improving the breeds of their ilmnest?o animais. Almost any person of proper qualification.* who wiil undertake the business of raising ani? mals tif improved breeds, will find ita profitable business. Such anima.s are bein;; Constantly brought southward at great ispense and with some risk, on account cf change of climax, food, etc. A tiader at the South possesses many and obvi?os advantages, H I. icu may be summed up in one seoreuce. Mr. B. W. Jones communicates to the Herral Carolinian the following hints for utilizing forest leaves: G'ther up the leaves and surface mold info heaps with weeding hoe?, aod let them lie some tuon lbs before hauling, for the b-aves to rot. Do this at any spare time you can command duriig ? he year When w? ll rotted, put one hundred one horse loads io the acre, and turu under Then broadcast forty bosh els r?f li n.e. or one haudred aod fifty of tn?r!. and harrow in. Or else rake ?.ff the loose leaves in the woods and u?e them as bedding in the Kable, or iu the cow or hog pen; and serape up thc surface mold alone using it at once upon your land Forest mold, if weil rotted, is an excellent man? ure, and in conjunction with lime or awl. offoro* one ol the readiest means of improving old lands. ] dy not lavor ?ht u-e of coarse litter, such as forest 1 ??th growing crops. If you wish ?o improve a piece of p-*ir ?.un?. and can afford co wait a year, it would be a good plan to get ap the leaves and mo'd altogether, and put at onee upon the land sud turu under. A citizen of Sooth Carolina furnishes an exchange a graphic description of the frightful orgies with which, in the name of worship, the negroes of hie region desecrate their churches and insult the Almighty Ruler of the Uni? rerse. We extract this paragraph from Iiis account : "Their manner of conducting religious ervices is not only a nuisance to those rho live near, bot it isa? mockery and io insult to him for whom their temples lave been built. Let any one who has ?ot heard these howling dervishes i heir orgies draw near some night an igten. A few moments will suffice to lonvince and disgust. At a recent at endance on this abominable mockery of eligi?os services, we heard a whining oice sing out : "I'm gwine to heben a a white hoss." Another jumped up od echoed: '-Blessde Lord, here's >n?r sister gwine to hell on a black mie." One raises her hand, and, with er eyes fixed on the ceiling, screams I see Jesus a tonkin' atme !" Another epliew: "I see him, too. a lookin* out e winder at me !" Another cries out Blent dc Lord, tell Jesus to send down r<-pe and i'll climb up to heben!'
