Youg UotuId. Young Mfr. Gould is undoubtedly the youngi st man who hits, or ints had for many yCar ', a recognized position in the street. He had barely attained his ma jority when his father made him a part ner in firn of whihelitlie other members were his own confidential broker, W. E. Conior, and his private secretary, G. P. Morosini. Mr. Jay Gould contributed to the capital of the firm $500,000. The capital invested by the other partners is not state(, bat from their positions and the fortunes it is presumed they have accunmulated by their connection with Mr. Gould it is estimated that they con tributed about $250,000 each, making the capital of the firm $1,000,000. This is an unusual capital for it simple broker ago bonse, in which membershi) in the Stock Exchange anid the attendant cred itsui)ply to a great extent the capital that would be re(Iuired in ordinary com iercial hulsin sm. It is understood that the new firm does not intend to transact a genural business-that is, to take ac counts jig commnission firms do-but that us b.usiness will be confined to orders from Mr. Gould. In spite of the exclusive business which the firm will do the junior part ner, Mr. George J. dould, is a person in whom the street naturally takes a very considerable interest. The street knows little of him, blutbelieves that it is likely toknow iuch. In personaal appearance he is prepossessing, hardly more than a boy inl looks, yet imore than a boy in business. He is about the average height, slender, yet muscular. His co'n plexion is swarthy, his hair aw ] omis Ing mitolstache are blak, and his eyes, like his father's. :., dark and penetrat ing. 1 ' ins father, lie is quiet and etent ; but in the company of Ei friends he is full of life and boyish spirits. A NATURALIST asserts that cranes carry small migratory birds-unable to perform the flight of three hundred and fifty miles -across the Mediterranean Sea on their backs. In flocks of cranes traveling south ward across this sea, little birds of many species are observed frequently flying from their perches only to return a mo ment after. MARnLE is generally considered to be a very rigid material. A renlarkable case, however, is given by M. Guebhard, in which a marble slab at one side of a door in the Albambra of Grenada has been 6ent considerably out of shape by super incumbent weight, without breaking. The slab is ten feet high, nine inches broad and two inches thick. M. TROUPEAU has lately made numer. ous experiments with head-gear in its relation to heat from the sun. He reaches these conclusions, which may servo as useful hints: 1. Head-coveringt of conical and rounded form are cooler than those of flat shape; the helmel is accordingly preferable to the kepi in hot climates. 2. A thick body, formed of a substance which conducts heal badly, protects effectually ainst the 1 sun's rays. 3. No metal shoud be used o in the construction of head-gear. 4. s Good ventilation, obtained by means of L lateral air-holes at the top and a gallery al i the base, isolating the head, causes a very sensible lowering of tho interior I temperature. A hea -cover of bad con - struction may be made cool by good ven y tilation. L IN is address before the British As sociation of Science at its recent fifty. Thompson, calculates that each mole cumle of hydrogen measures, at the most not more than a fifty-millionth of an inch~ Sin diameter-a minuteness of which we can form absolutely no conception. with the most powerful microscopes, lines ruled on glass the nneth-thous andth of an inch apart can be perceived, although confusion of the lines begins at the seventy-four-thousandth of .an inch rendering distinct vision beyond thai limit impossible with any instrumente now known. Soreby believes that a length of one eighty-thousandth of an inch would contain from five hundred tc two thousand molecules-say, fivE hundred in albumen and two thous and in water. It appears, therefore, that the smallest spere of organic mat ter clearly visible in the most power. fuil microscopes would contain mani millions of moleculus of albumen es water. Extaordinary Impediment of Speech. Mr. Edwin Cowles, editor of the Cleve. land Leader, in consequence of charges of a low character which were publicl~ made against him as the cause of an im pediment in his speech, published a state. muent under his own name as to the naaure of, his affliction, and to say the least, it is strangely remarkable. HE says: " The cause of my impediment o: speech is a most extraordinary one, and I am informed that there is not a similar case on record. The peculiarity of my deafness is akin to that of color blindness, There are certain sounds I never hear. I can not, nor did I ever, hear the his. ing sound of the human voice ; a portion of the consonant sounds I never hear; consequently, not hearing any of these sounds when I was a cild , I nev~er made them in my articulation, and I never be-. came aware of the existence of thoe sounds till I arrived at the age of man hood, and then I discovered their exist tence and was taught to make them in my articulation. It having become second nature foe me when I discovered the existence of those sounds, to speak without makin g them, and withal n~O1 hearing them when I do make them, It can be seen why I labor in my articula tion. In listening to a conversation I amu governed by the sense of the komarks, and by the motion of the lips in order to understand what is said. I never in my life heard the music of the birds, and I had always supposed that it was a poeti cal fiction till I grew up to matutity, and ascertained that it was reality. You may fill this room with can ary birds and all may sing at once, and not a note would I hear, but I would hear their wings flutter; the upper notes of a violin, piano or other musical instruments I never hear, although I would hear all notes below the seventh octave. I can hear the street car, but never hear the oar bells. I have walked by the aide of a policeman and have seen him blow his whistle which could be heard half a mile away, and yet I would not hear the least sound" ______ NEVER try to raise a family without a good newspaper, provided it contains the advertise ment of Dr. Bull's Gough Syrup ; for this val Tax Babylon (L.
