SAVAXNAh, October 8.-For the past sev eral days theve has been a growing disctn tent among the laborer on the rice planta tions on the Oarolina side of the Savannah River, which eulmint.ted in a strike on Fria. day by the hatide on Woodward Barnwell's plantation, who marched from one place to another, gaining accessesions. Tie Geld hands on Alfred Chisolm's plantation refused to join the strikers with few exceptions, and were brutally assaulted, several badley beat en. An attack was also made on the iannds, who remained on Bart well's and Haskell's places, and they were compelled to quit work. The stsikers demand one dollar atd a half a dry without task, which the plaitters retune, as I hey had already m ide a sligl t advange voluntarily. Warrants were issued on Sat - urday morning against the ringleaders, and fourteen were arrested for assault antt hat. tery and carried before Trial Jutlice He ward. Owing to the absence of witnesMes the cases were postponed until Monday. Today a general notice was given from plantation to plantation of the affair, and this morning the negroes began congi eg ting at Levy's Cross roads, eight miles from dcreven's Ferry, near where the examination was to be held. There were some five hundre I in the crowd, but so far as can' be ascertained no further vio lence has been perpeti ated mul th e G.rested parties have been committed to jail in default of bail. A planter just in reportsthnt, the situation is no quiet and further trouble is apprehen ded. 'ie strike is confined principailly to thi plneland negroes, the river land working all right. There were several fights reportedvin Saturday right at. qech Hill and Lucknjw, the result of which is not, known. Six ne groes were beaten on Barnwell's pave and are confined to the house. Several are se verely injured. The fourteen- negroes who were arrested on Saturdry were released on parole to appear on Monday lt leywards of tice. They were escorted down by a hundred iegroes, nien and women, with druns and flags, carrying umiuskets and swearing that, if one was arrested all would have to be ar rested, as *-dey's ,all leaders." The women were very violent and incited the men. The cook o Chaisolnm's pice staled that. the Ie groes had tihreitened to kill Mr. Chisolm, but this is considered braggadocio. A few river hanvds are working, !,uL genieral turbulence reigns, and tunless the negroes who wero re leased oi parole have beenv re-ariested and committed to jail, it is anticipated th.it there will be serious times The negroes are ugly and threatening.
