(Prepared by thc United State? Department Of Agriculture.) Results during 1921 in preventing apple scald in stored apples by tho use of oiled-paper wrappers have con firmed all previous reports that the trouble may be controlled lu this woy, If tho oiled wrappers carry a suth clently high percentage of oil. The United States Department of Agricul ture has recommended that the wrap pers should carry 15 to 20 per cent of oil If tliey aro to be effective in preventing the development of scald. When wrappers carrying a low pro portion of oil, in some cases as low ns 5 per cent, hnvo been used poorer results have been obtained. Tho demand for the right type of oiled wrappers for apples has been so great that many of the orders from growers have not been filled. About B0.000 boxes of apples wero packed In oiled wrappers at Wenatcbee, Wash., last season, and a similar num ber at Yakima, Wash. Scald ls a transportation and stor age disease that is produced by gases given off by the apples themselves. The disease ls greatly favored by warm storage and by delays lu reach ing storage. It ls particularly seri ous on the York Imperial, Grimes, Ar kansas (Mammoth Black ?Twig), Romo Beauty, Rhode Island Greening, Stay man Winesap, Wagener, and Baldwin varieties. In mild cases the apple ls merely tinted with brown, but In moro Bovero cases the entire skin layer ls killed. The disease looks like an apple rot. The gases which cause scald can be removed by ventilation or by ab sorbing them with oils. Apples scald far less In boxes, crates, or ventilated barrels than in the usual commercial barrels, but scald can be entirely pre vented by storing the apples In oiled, not waxed, wrappers. This treatment has brun found completely successful even when susceptible varieties have been placed in unventilated storage and held far beyond their usual stor age season. ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ANNOUNCEMENTS OF ty ty CANDIDATES. ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty FOR MAGISTRATE. r bevobv on?1 rtnnr>? mvunlf .? n-indi. : J.
