We Americans Need Ut Develop Our Thinking Powers. (Manufacturers' Record.) The president of an important col lege in thu South writes thu Manu facturers' Record: "lt seems lo me we may realize, in tho course ol' a few years, thal we have been living in the neighborhood of a volcano, a hurricane and an earthquake." This is a true statement. A vol cano, a hurricane and au earthquake are willi us in potential power for evil; Ibby may break on us at any moment. No man can tell when or where a volcano 'may burst forth and cover the world with wreck and ruin. No man can tell where a dead ly hurricane may sweep, carrying be fore, it much of all thal we have thought civilization had achieved. In a letter, in somewhat similar vein, one of the most thoughtful business men in the country refers lo "the terrille internal stresses of the world where so few seem to l>e aware of the torr?fie currents whose ti rees ?ire in opposition throughout the world and seo only the ripples on the .surface." These two letters indicate how tho really thoughtful men of the country who are looking beneath Ihe surface fool as to the problems of the hour. Tho volcano and the hurricane and tho earthquake aro potentialities of evil, and as our other friend willes, there are "terrific internal stresses" of the world which must, he met, and "terrille currents whose forces arc sweeping In opposite directions." while the people at large see only "ripples on the surface" and walk ovor tho smoldering volcano and hear not the muttering of the htirrl can nor the rumbling of the earth quake. The situation is well expressed in Mrs. Browning's words: "Karin's crammed with Heaven', And every common bush atire with Cod; Hut only he who sees takes off Ids shoes; The rest sit 'round it and pluck blackberries." The majority of people seem not to .soe that earth is crammed with Iloavon, nor that the burning hush ls afire with Cod. They are con tent to pluck blackberries, and in this contentment is the great danger of the hour. ll is easier, as one minister recently "-roto us, to make the American pub'ic weep than to make them think The duty of the hour is to think, and think deeply, on world problems. (Greenville Piedmont.) Many automobilists who otherwise obey the automobile laws violate the statute as to dimming lights when approaching another automobile. Because of this failure by some to keep the law, other automobile drivers are often temporarily blinded and barely avoid collision or other accidents. For the benefit of all concerned. The Piedmont publishes Section f,ye, of the Criminal Code of South Caro lina, as amended hy the General As sembly in 10 10: Every motor vehicle while in use on a public highway shall he so constructed as to exhibit during the period necessary from or after sunset until not necessary before sunrise a white light visi ble within a reasonable distance in the direction twoard whiclTthe vehicle is proceeding, and a red 1 i ii li t in the reverse direction: Provided, That in case of heavy fog. if necessary^ .such light shall be displayed in thu daytime before sunset and after sunrise: Pro vided. This is the law of South Carolina. Anyone who violates it can and should ho arrested and punished. It does not say that dimmers may be used but that-dimmers must be used. This law ls ignored as much as it is observed.
