Stokes, of Walhalla, having married their eldest daughter. Ile had been critically ill for some time, ind the announcement of his death was not unexpected. Mr. Covington is survived by his wife and st eral children. The bereaved ones have tho sympathy of many friends in their sot row. Sheriff stowe, of Stephens coun ty, Georgia, came over to Walhalla last Sunday to got one Paul Whit field, colored, who bad escaped from the jail at Toccoa. lt was reported (thal the negro escaped from the jail it the time of the recent storming of the Toccoa jail, but this is a mistake. Ile bad escaped some time previous to the lynching. He was being held m a liquor violation charge. Sheriff Davis while in Seneca last Saturday .ecomiized the darkey, arresting him while he was standing in the Seneca post (drice. -Sheriff R. W. Buckner, of Pilou nt county. Alabama, arrived in Walhalla hist Thursday with requisi tion papers for Will Morton, formerly >f Mewry, this county, who is wanted in Alabama on the charge of murder. Morton was arrested a short while back by Sheriff Davis and held In the Oconee ia il temporarily, but was re leased on bond about ten days before, when the time thal Sheriff Davis could hold him expired. Morton re turned to Alabama willingly and gave sheriff Buckner no trouble whatever, saying that he would have gone without requisition papers; that he is not guilty of tho ( barge prefer red against him, and that he will he able to establish Iiis innocence. Mr. Morton, the accused man's father, lett Oconee las) Monday to attend tho preliminary hearing in Alabama next Friday. There will doubtless be many re ports coining in from all sections of the county along creeks and moun tain streams recording damage to crops by the recent high waters. In this Immediate vicinity Cane Creek ?ind tributaries have been quite tur bulent, and there will be considera ble (lainage to crops and lands all ?ilong the course, though il is always impossible to make anything like ac curate estimates as to the amount of damage done until some lime after ibo water has receded. The Vernor bridge, on the road leading across Catie Creek, just out ol' town, on Church street, has been washed away, hiing taken as a whole down si tea m below the Hughs bridge nt Ibo Katherine street outlet. Crops along that section give appearance of being in bad shape. The creek spread in that terirtory from hill to hill on opposite sides ol" Hie stream, giving the appearance of a good-sized river. Below Wes! I nion, on Cane Creek, the Walhalla Light and Power Company's dam was reported yester day completely out of sight, tho wa ter being higher than the dani. No tice was given to patrons of the light ing system to gel their lamps ready for service, as lhere would ho no current available. Wans ley, of Franklin county, Georgia, was in Walhalla for a short while, having come over to receive from Sheriff .lohn W. Davis ono Hover Walker, colored, who is charged with "shoot ing up" a negro church over on the Georgia side. Walker was captured hy Mr. Davis in ?he Richland section. He had escaped from Georgia about a year ago. General Sessions Court will con velo? in Walhalla next Monday. The build ing is of cement construction, is sub stantial, attractive and admiraly ad apted to school purposes. The work of addition will be completed in the near future. Messrs. Lylos and Miss Kate Smith. -Miss Sallie St Hiding has been elected as Supervisor of Rural Schools for Oconoo. succeeding Miss Annie McMahan, who resigned from that office about May Isl. this year. Miss McMahan made a most efficient officer, i nan g.. tating a groat work that has proved of ?nest i mable value to Oconoo, and Miss Strihling will prove, we feel sure, an able and wor thy successor. She will take active (barge of her now position about July 1st. Miss McMahan is at pres ent in California attending tho expo sition. Excursion to Charleston. The Southern Railway will ope rate an excursion train from Wal halla to Charleston on Thursday of next week, July S th. Ward Goodlet created some excite ment yesterday near noon when he hired an automobile and drove to the home of H. C. Staines, just north of the cRy, w hore ho called Starnos out of his house and opened fire on him with a revolver. St?rues received a bullet in tho ankle and hobbled back in the house, while his assailant got in the machine and drove hack to tho city. The source of the trouble is un known. The writer suggests that thc week before chautauqua he designated by our town people as "clean-up week." This suggestion is meant moro espe cially for housekeepers, it being a foregone conclusion that the business men will have their establishments in fit attire for the occasion, and as a matter of course the City Council will take care of the streets, park, etc. David McClanahan, of Westmin ster, was in Seneca Saturday with the surveyors who aro making the new ?nade for the Southern. The Once-a-\Veek Club was de lightfully entertained last Thursday afternoon by Mrs. W. .1. Holloway. This being the last meeting of the club year, an open meeting was held, to which a number of visiters were invited. A' the close of the business program the hostess introduced a clever contest, in which Mrs. C. N. (?ignilliat won the prize. A delicious menu was served at tho close of the meeting. Miss Eleanor Norman entertained nt a large party last Tuesday after noon lin honor of her sister, Mrs. Ar thur Norman, of Alabama. The guests were entertained on the spacious hotel piazza, where a dozen tables were placed for cards. In the score Mrs. Ashe was lucky, winning a beau tiful crochet piece, a lovely piece of embroidered lingerie going as tim guest prize. Tho delightful music furnished by tho Misses Norman was greatly enjoyed. In caring for her guests Miss Norman was assisted by her sister, Miss Nina, and Miss Nor ma Moore, ol' Walhalla.
