Kock Hill. Sept. 8. Arthur Gar ner, a negro, wanted at lintier coun ty. Pa., for murder, was killed at the Rock Hill fe tlllzer plant this morn ing by Patrolman J. c. steele. Steele and Pa.rolman Frank Strait went to the pb nt to arrest the ne gro after learning he was working here. Officer Strait started to read the warrant when the negro pulled an automatic pistol. Before he could shoot he was shot dead by Of ficer Steele. Later two Winchesters and another pistol supposed to be long to the dead negro were found In a barrel near the fertilizer plant. A jury empaneled by the coroner made a careful investigation nnd ex onerated Officer Steele, the verdict being that ihe officer had killed tho I negro in discharge of his duty. Sunday, Octo ber 4th, Aside as Day of Prayer, In last week's Courier President Wilson's prayer for peace proclama tion was briefly mentioned, he hav ing set aside Sunday, October 4th, as the special day. Sumter, Sept. 8.-Archie Mozin go, son of the chief of police of Dal lington, was drowned at Pocallo Springs lake, a pleasure resort near Sumter, to-day. The 14-year-old lad was in bathing with some others and jumped off a spring-hoard into the water beyond his depth and could not swim out. His companions went to Iiis aid, but were unable to rescue him. The body was soon recovered and will be sent to Darlington for bu rial. To American Registry. New York, Sept. 10.-The United Fruit Company formally announced to-day that its fleet of 20 passenger and live freight vessels, representing a total of 150,000 gross tons, had been transferred from British to American registry. In speaking of Newberry Col lege, M which 1 have the honor to bo an alumnus, having graduated there from while the college was ai VVal I halla, she says the college and all its belongings were moved to Walhalla I and the name changed to Adger Col I lege. The error is in the conclud ing part of the statement. During its temporary sojourn of nine years In this Pearl of the Piedmont, the in stitution was always known as New berry College, and continued under the jurisdiction of the Lutheran Synod of South Carolina and never did change Its name or lose Its iden tity. After its return to its former home at Newberry, the Presbyterians established a college tn the building In Walhalla and named lt after one of their great preachers and scholars -Adger College-a distinguished honor to both.
