This statement is made by Dr. E. M. Nlghtbert, of the United States bureau of animal industry, who has charge of arrange ments for tho cattle dipping vat to be installed for demonstration pur poses at the Fifth National Corn Ex position here next January. "Hy co operative efforts," says Dr. Nlghtbert, "H\o lick can be eradicated i rom any fa rmi no matter what the conditions, within six to nine months." Th!? This dem onstration is one feature of the com prehensive exhibit from tho Federal Department of Agriculture, which, together with the educational ex hibits from ninny State agricultural colleges and experiment stations, and competitive exhibits from many States, gives tho exposition Its rec ognized value as a potent factor in tho agricultural development of the nation. Tho cattle tick costs South Caro lina about $1,000,000 annually, ac-1 cording to a conservative estimate by Dr. M. Ray Powers, of Clemson College, State veterinarian. Dr. Pow ers will assist Dr. Nlghtbert In dem onstrating tho dipping vat at tho exposition. "The cattlo tick prevents safe breeding, handling and markoting of cattle because it transmits disease to evory animal lt infests," says Dr. Nlghtbert, In pointing out the neces sity for the eradication of the pest. 'Tho cattle tick ls easily, perma nently and lnexjienslvely eradicated by dicing cattle in a concrete vat containing tho standard solutions." W. M. U. Quarterly Meeting. The quarterly meeting of the W. M. U., Beaverdam Association, was hold with Bethel church on Wednes day, October ltith. The large attend ance and general interest tended to ward the spiritual uplift of tho meet ing. Some interesting and vital questions-aside from the program were discussed. In the absence of the divisional president, our ever-faithful and effi cient superintendent, Mrs. D. A. Per ritt, presided over the meeting, and her words of encouragement, coun sel and good cheer to all societies will long be remembered and will firing forth much fruit in the Mas er's kingdom. A seventh man was arrested on an indictment charg ing perjury in connection with his testimony before tho grand jury In vestigating the occurrence. Reginald Thomas, constable, was among those charged with tho attack on the girl. Minnie La Valley was seized on the street of the village the night of Au gust. !10, divested of clothing and smeared with tar or paint. A dispatch from Kershaw says: One of the most progressive and up-to-date farmers in this entire com munity is J. \V. Holden, who has broken the record for raising corn, so far as this immediate vicinity is concerned. Mr. Holden bas Just gathered tho corn raised on one acre of ground, with the result that he has 128% bushels to his credit from this one acre. Ile also gathered from tho some acre 1,215 bundles of fod der. This amount of fodder, together with the corn, gives a money value of $187.72 at present prices of the articles. Mr. Holden used fertili zers, compost, cotton seed meal on this acre of land that cost $G8, the work and cultivation of this one acre, which was done by Mr. Holden him self, represented a cost of $5. Mak ing a total cost of production $73 to $75, leaving a net gain of $109.72 to tho acre. The entire work was done by a small cultivator. Smith, wife of the cash ier of the Koo wee Bank here, was bitten by a dog last Tuesday and taken to Pasteur Institute in At lanta Friday for treatment. She thought the dog was sick and was trying to give It some medicine when it bit ber. Mr. Smith killed tho dog and sent Its head to Colum bia for examination. Friday he re ceivied a telegram stating that the dog had hydrophobia, and he imme diately accompanied his wife to At lanta. Their son, Theo, and small baby are also with their mother. Mr. Smith returned Monday and reports that Mrs. Smith is getting along nicely, and that there is now no danger, for which their numerous friends aro truly grateful. Bees Chase Him to Death. York, Pa., Oct. 21.-George Frey, aged sixty-eight, was hiving a swarm of boes on the farm of bis brother in lower Windsor township, when Hie insects attacked him. Frey ran at full speed to escape their stings, but about 20 feet away he fell dead from over-exertion. Demand Cur Service for Pair, Columbia, Oct. 24.-No cars are running to-day.
