Il TRIP TO EOKWII mi' Amsterdam, Juno 7, 1906.-We| went to tho Isle of Maarken yes'tor-1 day and it certainly was an interest ing trip. The people here do noth ing but fish, and I nover saw such a Meet of fishing smacks in my life, and it certainly was a beautiful sight. Wo visited their village and they have the funniest little honses imag inable. Their beds are in the sides of the wall, just like berths on a| ?hip. Fashions nover change on this island, for the peoplo have been wear ing the samo kind of clothes for the last three hundred years. Ouo old lady showed us a bridal dress that had been handed down from mother to eldest daughter for, I think she said, ono hundred and eighty yours. It certainly was a fancy thing, all brocaded and worked to a finish. Tho boys and girls all dress alike until they a/e eight yoars old. Tho wry you toll 1 he boys from tho girls is that they have a little round plug put in the top of their oapa. The | girls wear their hair long until they ^ are eighteen, when they out off all except one ringlet on eaoh templo. On our way baok from Maarken we stopped at Monnekendam, ano ther fishing plaoe, although they are j muoh more up to date. It was here i that ? saw tbs prettiest girl I ever saw. She was positively dainty with her little wooden shoes, jet black Jttir and very blue eyes, besidos a ^0hple in eaoh oheek. She'd smile every time I asked her to so that I could see them. She was with a orowd of those that oame down to see us. I spotted hor before we landed, and then I went up and spoke to her. With her broken English and my broken Dutch we made out protty woll. She walked through tho town with me an?1 slipped her foot out of hor shoo so I could comparo tho size with others. When wo calmly shook hands and said good bye I told hor to meot mo at tho boat again next year, and that's tho last I'll ovor see of her. I). 8. III Tyner's Dyspepsia Itemedy-A Guar-j anteed Tore. Paris, Nov. 14.-Countess de Cas tellano (formerly Miss Anna Gould) was to-day granted a divorce and the custody of her obildren, who, how ever, will not be allowed to be taken from France without the consent of Count Boni de Castellano, their father. The end of the famous case came suddenly. The Court brushed aside the demand of the Count's lawyer for an examination of witnesses and, as anticipated, the public prosecutor did not even ask to be heard. As soon as the Court assembled Judge Ditto handed down the judg ment, whioh is a sweeping victory for the Countess. The Count was given tho right to see the ohildren at stated periods at the home of their grand mother and keep them a month an nually during the holidays. The Count's demand for an "ali mentary" allowance of $50, OOO annu ally was pronounced by tho Court to be without foundation in the law and was rejected. Tho only point decided in the Count's favor was the imposition of the inhibition on the Countess to take the children out of France without their father's consent. The Court appointed the president of the Chamber of Notaries to liqui date tho affairs of the husband and wife. Tho judgment was givoi. with the costs against tho Count. Tho decree, tho reading of which hardly consumed five minutes, was do livorod by tho judgo in a voice so low as to be practically inaudible to the crowd filling the court room. Many women climbed on chairs in a vain effort to hear tho decision and when they were aware that a divorce was granted they seemed actually to resent the loss of the excitement of the publio trial at wi ich the people in high society would be compelled to testify. Washington, D. C., Nov. 14. Howard Goulu, brother ot Countess de Castellano, who is in the oity, when informed by the Associated Press that his sister had been granted a divoroe from the Count, said that while he was grateful for the infor mation he had no comment to make npon it. The decree of the Court with re aped to the children not leaving Franoe without thc consent of tho mother, ho said, was rathor to bo ex pected, as it was in accordance with tho French customs. Upon being furnished with details of tho decree, Mr. Gould remarked : "That seems to bo very satisfactory." J. W. Boll. Vesuvius Emits Smoke and Ashes. Naples, Nov. 10.-At noon to-day Mount Vesuvius and the surrounding villages were shaken up by a kind of earthquake, which was accompanied by detonations and followed by a consider able fall of ashes, especially over Ott a jano, whioh was destroyed during the eruption of last April and is now in course of reconstruction. The phenome non caused groat alarm. Investigation showed that part of the orator of the volcano had fallon in. During tho afternoon thoro wore three, moro slight shooks in tho Vesuvian re gion and a further discharge of ashos, which was blown in tho direction of Pompoii and Ottajano.
