NEGRO SHOO?SJFOUR IO DEATH. ON A DEATH-DEALING TOUR-HE IS AT LAST KILLED-TWO OFFICERS DIE. Asheville, N. 0., NOV. 14.-Fight ing bravely in defense of their cap tain, Patrolmen Charles Hlaekstock and William Bailey, two of the most efficient me tu hors of Asheville's police force, were shot to death on bo ut h Main street nt 11.30 o'clock last night by a negro, who said that his name was Will Harris, of Char lotte, a desperado, for whom a large reward has beon offered for some time. Prior to the death of the two offi cers, a negro restaurant keener, named Ben Allison, foll dead at the hands of Harris, who, handling a Savage rifle, killed him without provocation. Another negro, named Tom Neil, lies mortally wounded, he, too, being shot before the officers took a hand in the melee. Harris started out on his death dealing tour from a negro house on Valley street. He fired into two houses ns he made his way to South Main street, one of tho principal streets of the city. As ho roached Eagle stroot be fired at and wounded Allison. On South Main street tbo desperado encountered Tom Neil and fired point blank at him. Tho noise of the shooting caused Police Captain Pago and Officers Bailey and l?lnckstock to start from police headquarters on tho ruu, blow ing their whistles as they went. Baily took his stand at the head of South Main street and the Court House Square, leaving his captain and Blackstock to go on ahead. Capt. Page met the negro in the cen ter of Main street, the former re ceiving a bullet in the arm from the negro's rifle. The wounded captain called upon Blackstock to fire, but before the offi cer could do so, ho fell dead with a bullet in the chest. Harris then started on a ruu for the square, where Patrolman Bailey was waiting for him. Bailey fired twice, but missed his man, the negro, turning his rille on the officer, sont a bullet crashing through the latter's brain. The officer lived but a few minutes after ho foll. Tho negro then ran down South Main street towards Biltmore, and at midnight was still at largo. Tho greatest excitement followed tho killing of tho officers. A general fire alarm was turned in by tho chief of police, Hern ard, for the purpose of calling out tho militia companies, and several posses quickly formed to take up the pursuit of tho murderer. The Desperado Killed by Posse. Asheville, N. C., Nov. 15.-Will Harris, the negro who killed two Asheville policemen and two negroes Tuesday night, was shot to death by a posse near Fletcher, ten miles from Asheville, to-day. Early to-day word was received that a negro had been discovered in a barn near Fletcher and aid was re quested. A hundred men left for the scene and surrouuded the ham. Rawlings was sentenced to death, Monday, December 8d, being fixed for the date of execution. Before; sentence was passed Rawlings pro tested the innooeuoe of himself and his sons, concluding with a warning to the Court, "If you do not give us a new trial, our blood will be upon your hands." Rawlings, his three BOUS, and Alf Moore, a negro, were convioted of the murder of two ohildren of the Carter family, near Valdosta, more than a year ago. One son was given a life sentence, the other four being under sentence of death, to be exe cuted iu December. Chicago, Nov. 14.-More than one-half the passengers on au immi grant train on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad were killed and in jured in a collision Monday between the passenger train and a freight near Woodville, Ind. One hundred and sixty-li ve pas sengers were on tho train, and of these forty-seven were eithor killed outright or were burned to death in the fire which broke out in the wreckage immediately after the col lision. The names of all the dead will probably never be known, as forty-five of the dead bodies wen? consumed in the flames or were so badly burned that identification will be out of the question.
