Frank Purcoll, tho Piedmont Hotel barber, was acquitted of tho ohargo of murdering his fatbor, Henry J. Pur coll,.a well known contractor of this city, on last Wednesday. Tho father had the open knife iu his hand, aud fearing serious, if not fatal, injury to his lovod onos, young Purcoll tired tbroo shots at bis father, death resulting almost in stantly. Ho will return to his work in a a few days. .Sympathy was altogether with tho young man. Board Bought Much Whiskey. Columbia, March 24 -Clerk Martin to-night announeed tho first quarterly purchases made by tho now board of dis pensary directors. As thoro is already a stock on hand of $200,000 in excess of tho limit provided by law, and in view of tho favored tirms blacklisted by tho in vestigating committee, much interest is manifesteil to know what firms will be favored by thc new board and how deep they will walde in making tho dist pur chases. Tho purchases aro lighter than usual and are confined principally to goods of cheap class. They total 12,000 barrels of whiskey and brandy, 12 cars boor, 4,425 cases of case goods. Death of Attorney G?nerai Guntar. Columbia, Maroh 20.-Attorney Gene ral Uriel X. Mr. Gunter was a young man of real ability and sterling qualities. He waa but thirty-six yenrs 01 aire, but in that time had risen to the exalted position of Attorney Genoial of bin State, and be has tilled that ofiico with ability and honor. He was a worker-some say a plodder, but in this woild it is most ofteu that tho ploddor and tho toiler win tho laurels. For moro than ton years I have been in almost daily asso ciation with U. X. (.unter., Jr., first as private secretary lo Governor Evans, tbon aa assistant to Attorney General Bollingor, and then as Attorney General, aud iu all that time ho has been the per fect gentleman, the loyal friend, the un ostentatious plodder, the advocate of the poor and unfortunate, and the faithful official. Mr. Guntor was the sort of friend worth having. Ho never push?d himself nor did be oaro for glory. The knowledge of duty woll done; of victory waa all he sought. Mr. Gunter was born in Hatesburg, l exington county, on December 5, 1870. Ho acquired bis common school educa tion there and graduated from the South Carolina College in 18i?2, alter whioh ho wont to Aiken to practioo law, in partnership first with Ii. C. Jordan, and later with John Gary Evans. Mr. Evans, on being elected Governor, ap pointed him privato secretary. He after wards booame dork of the olaim com mittee of the I louse of Representatives, romoving at tho close of this work to Spartacburg to practico law. He waa made assistant Attorney Gonoral under W. A. Harbor in 1898and was reappointed by Gen. G. Duncan Uellingor, who BUC coeded Mr. Harbor. In 1902 Mr. Guntor was nominatod over W. H. Stevenson, iu tho Democratic primary, as tho candidato for Attorney I General, and was elected at the gonoral election iu that your. Ho was ro-oloctod without opposition in 1904 for the term to expire dtiring tho next session of the Gonoral Assembly. A curious coincidence of tho map ?B that the heaviest precipitation, from .">?> to 00 inches, occurs in exactly opposite corners of tim State-the northern halves of Greenville, Picketts and Goonoo counties, and at the other end of tho State a circle ombraciug a third of the central portion of Charleston, southern half of Horkoley, a small strip of tho southeastern part of Dorchester and two square miles of tho eastern edge of Col leton. The dry portion of the State, which is 10 to 12 inches less, takes in the Savan nah river sides of Barnwell and Hampton, Sumter and Kershaw almost entire, east ern half of Fairfield, southeastern half of Lancaster, southern edge of Chesterfield, all of Lee southwestern portions of Dar lington and Florence, northwest third of Williamsburg and northern half of Clar endon. Berlin, March 27.-Tho Vorwartz, on Saturday morning, printed statistics re garding tho casualties in Russia during tho international disorders in tho empire. Tho figures show that during tho year 1005) as a result of the repressive mea sures adopted by the government, 14,180 persons woro shot or ordered to be hanged and 10,524 wore wounded. In addition to this 1,307 political prisoners have been executed since tho Hist of this year. Killing in Lee County. Sumter, March 24.-John Gaylard was killed at Heriot's cross roads, Leo county, at !?..".(> last night by Grover Mathis. Tho killing grew out of a quar rel at a danoo. Gaylard is said to have been tho aggressor. Mathis fired but ono shot. Death was almost instan taneous. Capt. Charles Inglesby Dead. Columbia, March 20 -Capt.
