FARMERS' UN OF INFOR Conduct* South Carolina Karn)er?' Educal The farinera of the State will deane take notice that the commit toe in obarge of thia Bureau of In formation does not aaaume, or pre tend to, pose as tho great head or ?eat of knowledge, where any and all knowledge pertaining to tho farming interest of the State may l?o obtained direjtly from the individual members of our committee alone ; but wo so Qioit short articles from practical farmers for these columns from every quarter of tho Stato on the subjects of how to grow profitable crops and how to turn the profits of our farm ?crops into the hands of tho produc ers. And then again the Farmers' Union at the Crossing wants to hear from the unions at tho Forks of the Creeks, and tho Klatwoods Union wants to hear how the unions in the Ked Hills are doing, In fact, we want to know more about each other, and what is the best way to got at the things that are to tho farmers' interest. Wc know of no better plan to got together and to learn from each other than to maintain a Bureau of Information to fanners in tho county newspapers throughout the State. When ii is known to the fanners of the State that all the committee in charge of our Bureau of Informa tion are practical and progressive iarmers from the fields, and that we are in close touch with our State and government experiment stations, it ?s apparent at once that our Fanners' Bureau of Information has behind it tfor our support a source from which to driw upon for its information on I subjects of practical and scientific farming that is not excelled. Wc now have in preparation for Farmers' Union columns reports from a series of co operative experi ments on the subjects of growing nitrogen in the soil and the "Aldrich System" of rotating crops by plant ing two rows of cotton and two rows of corn in regular alternation over ?he whole field, and changing these rows each season. Our experiments are conducted by (practical farmers on their farms in co-operation with experiment sta tions. Wo expect to maintain profitable prices for our products by organiza tion an loyal co-operation among farmors. With the birth of the Farmers' Union the farmers of the South have taken their rightful position. Farmers, line up shoulder to shoul der with your neighbors, and lay hold of the wheels of the Farmers' Union and push your interest for ward. Growing Fertilizers in the Soil. If cotton is king the cowpea is queen of the South ! It is estimated that there is afloat over each acre of Land in the air seventy-five million of pounds of free nitrogen. Four fifth 8 of the air is free nitrogen. A good crop of COW peas is said to store away in the soil upon its roots as much nitrogen to each acre as lhere is contained in from two to three thousand pounds of cotton Meed meal, or other high grade am mon i at ed fertilizers. What a Godsend this wonderful .OOWpea is to the Southern farmer! In the cowpea the Southern fanner has a sure crop for forage for his ani mals and a line, rieh grain food for all stock and his family, too. And more-by intelligent cultivation of Abe pea crop it may bo utilized as (nature's own vehicle to transport this valuable fertilizer from nature's inexhaustible storehouse-tho air .directly into the soil of the farmers1 rields ! Thou, again, tho long burrowing voots of the cowpea is driven into the subsoil by the cheap power of mature, which may in somo degree take tho place of very costly subsoil ploughing with mule power. Tho millions of little holes left in the soil by decayed roots of the pea are voritable little wells filled with i noist uro in the decayod roots humus-that indispensable proser vor of moisture that wo must depend upon to bridge our orops over sum mer drought. Communications intended for this 1 J. C. Stripling, : ION BUREAU MATION. id by the .ional and Co-Operative Union. Department should bo addressed to P, ndleton, S. C. Farmers of the South need never buy a dollar's worth of nitrogen ammonia-if they will only follow nature's simple way of supplying this costly fertilizer ingredient to the soil. What Controls the Colton Market ? Wo need not go far among the records to prove to any fair-minded man that mon's influence wave the prico as much as supply and demand. Wall, then, if one sot of mon, like Wall Street, can c .itrol prices, why is it that the men who produco the cotton and know cotton cannot con trol prices even better than Wall Street, who is not close to the foun tain, in the cotton fields, where all knowledge as to actual conditions of cotton must necessarily spring from? Some say, "Oh, well, Wall Street has the money and they are organ ized, too !" Well, when it comes down to solid facts tho fanners of this country have four times r.s much money invested in his business as all the manufacturing interests of thu country, and over four-fifths of the whole business of our country is | based upon the farming interest. A combination of even one-half or| much less of the wealth of the cotton farmers of the South would snow Wall Street under so deep that she could never put her head up high enough again to say cotton. All the South needs is organization ! Sh? has as good collateral and as much as is needed to control her business. Letter to C. W. & J E. Bauknight, Walhalla. The battleship Kansas, tho largest war vessel ever built in the Fast, was la inched durii g last August at tho yard of the New York Shipbuild ing Company in Camden, N. J. Miss Annie Hoch, daughter of Governor! Hoch, acted as sponsor for the ship. An unusual feature of the launching was the fact that the vessel was christened with spring water tnken to Camden from Kansas by (iovernor Hoch. About the same time an immense war vessel was launched in England for the navy of Japan. A small bal loon huno; at the bow, and as the ship glided into the sea a young Japanese woman pulled a card and liberated several pigeons, We think the Japanese method far preferable to the use of wine. Even the secular papers contrast the sobriety of the army and navy of Japan with the drunkenness of the soldiers and sailors of Kassia, and to this very point attribute BUCC688 to the one and failure to the oluer.
