St. Augustine, Fla., March 6.-Lieu tenant General John M. Schofield, United States army, rotired, died at 8.20 o'clock last night. He was attacked Sunday morning with cerebal hernmorrhage. Ills wife and young daughter were with him. With the death of Gen. Schofield the last surviving army commander during the Civil war has passed away. G KN. HCUOFKI-D'H MCCORD. Washington, March 5.-Gen. John M. Schofield, who died last night at st. Augustine, Fla., was secretary of war during 1868-00 and his career was marked by a continuous service in the army from the time he entered West Point in 1849 until he ,retired September 20, 1805, with the rank of lieutenant general, the high est military honor then permitted by law of Congress. His command of the army extended from 1888 to 1805. Since his re tirement from the army he bas made fre quent visits to Washington, though he made it a practice each year to spend the winter in Florida and the summer in the East. Greenville, March 2.-Andrew Thomp son was hanged in the jail yard boro to day shortly after ll o'clook. Tho negro was convicted Pt the last torin of tho General Sessions Court of criminally assaulting Mrs. James, tho wifo of a farmer living near Taylor's Station, in this county. Lynching was narrowly averted at the time, hut tho execution to day was regular and the law's own vindication. When taken to tho gallows Thompson made a brief statement, in which ho warned all of his raco to keep away from mean whiskey and bad com pany, two things to which ho attributed his unhappy end. Columbia, March 1.-Cololugh Stukes, tho Sumter county negro desperado who stabbed to death in a particularly vicious and fiendish manner Capt. D. E. Wells, on whose farm he was working at the time, is to hang for his crime, a docision filed in the Supremo Court to-day having affirmed the verdict of guilty in tho lower "oort. The sentence of five years against Constable William E. Roswell for killing Joseph C. Blount, a traveling man, at Florence, after quarreling with Blount because he patronized a blind tiger, is also attn med in an opinion filed to-day. Taylor, of BOB ton, will de liver a series of lectures bore, beginning on Thursday evening, March 22, on tem perance from a scientific standpoint. Dr. Taylor is a Baptist minister and has an international reputation as a lecturer, and we trust he will be greeted with a full house at each appointment. One lecture will he delivered on each Thurs day, Friday and Saturday night, and two on the Sabbath. The lectures will be given at the Baptist chu rob. On Wednesday, March 14, Dr. A. A. Willet8. styled an "Apostle of Sunshine," will deliver the next regular course of lectures for tho Westminster Lyceum Club. Dr. Willets ba? for the past half century occupied a front rank among the pulpit orators and lecturers. He is highly recommended by the olergy and press and it is natural to expect something for soul food from him. Rev. Dr. Hodge, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Wilmington, N. C., has the following to say of Dr. Willets: "The lecture of Dr. Willets last night was to thoso who were fortunate enough to enjoy it, one of those rare treats to satisfy and chaim without alloy. No man can lecture on sunshine and AU his audienoe with plea surable emotions without being full of sunshine himself. It showed itself in a countenance of remarkable mobility, re flecting in its play of expression every varying emotion that be described in a sweet and sympathetic voice, in a mind garnished with the ohoicest gomB of lit erature and sparkling wit and flashing with racy anecdotes, but above all in a heart full of kindness and love for his fellow men. that enjoyed all the good things of lifo, and with gratitude to the giver and desired to share them with everyone else. A lecture like this de lights the mind and oharms the taste and makes one feel not only happier, but better." Miss Bennie Dilwortb went to Atlanta Monday to see her brother, W. A. Dil wortb, who is seriously sick. Presiding Elder R. Herbert Jones, of Anderson, preached a flue sermon in the Methodist church Sunday evening. Rov. .1. R. Moore, of the Baptist church, called in bis appointment for services at that hour and his congregation worshipped with the Methodists. Ordination services were held in the new church at the Chosweil mill village last Sunday afternoon. Rev. A. P. Marett was assisted by Rev. J. R. Moore. Four deacons were ordained as follows: W. P. O'Kelley, L. L. Mitchell, W. H. Kv,ms and C. B. Moss. Tho Baptist church here has sent a do nation to the Japanese sufferers. It will be distributed through the Christian Herald's relief committee. Rev. Moore read a lotter Sunday from Dr. Louis Klopsch, tho propiietor of the Christian Herald, acknowledging receipt of tho contribution. Mason, tho proud parents of this young man, are native South Carolinians, tho doctor himself having lived in Seneca a numbor of years. Mrs. Mason is pleasantly remem bered as Miss Luoille McKee, she having paid repeated visits to Mrs. E. A. Hinos, and was groatly admired for her beauty and chaim of personality.
