Tillman as a Witness Senator Tillman has boon before the disponsary investigating oom mitton, and ha? testified; or at least has done what he considors is testifying. As a matter of faot. instead of answering quostions ss a witness on a stand, the Senator turned the occasion into a campaigu proceeding and mado a stump spoech. For tho past several mouchs Senator Tillman has boen sayiug that .ho ovil repute of tho dispensary was caused by the dishonesty of the officials. From what ho said it was to be supposed that he know of direct and speoifio acts of wrong-doing, aud could name his man and tho occasion. Ou tho stand ho failod to do so, and admitted he kuew no moro than tho hearsay knowledge possessed by hundreds. liv this niothod of procoduro, Senator Tillman has done the committee no good, as ho has brokou down tho diguity that heretofore has prevailed during its ses sions. IIo has dono hims?'f no good, as it has shown that all be ha? io say about tho corruption of the officials was found ed on no kuowledgo possosso< by him; lt was only talk, or what is called in slung, .'hot air." Mr. I i ll mai i was tho founder of tho disponsary. During tho tor m of its ex istence he har boon ita cha* pion. Ile expressed 1 ' nisei f oft mi as hoing willing lo take tho stan-' dui in, this investiga tion to reveal all he kubw. Ile has taken tho stand, and, to uso tnoio slang, he has "fizzled." Why? What has boon his reason for putting himsolf in a positiou ho kuow he could not sustain whon tho tost carno? Did ho think ho would gain anything by it? Does bo imagiuo that yesterday's proceedings bas holpod him any? His conduct is more or less of a puzzler, for Sountor Tillman is a brainy man, but his actions do not appear to bo so very sousi ble.-Sumtor News. tor Biliousness and Sick Headacho Take Orino Laxative Fruit Syrup. We have never been a follower of Sena tor Tillman, politically or otherwise and never oxpect to be, yet wo recognize bis al.,lily aud do not hesitate to admit it, though confessing to as little admiration of him as wo have entertained sinco his entry into politics. Tho passing yoars have, perhaps, removed some of tho ran cor, or maybo wo have becomo moro philosophical, but bo that as it may, wo aro glad to ondorso any wiso and states manlike policy bo 01 eluates or advo cates. Viewing tho events of tho pres ent from this dispassionate and non-par tisan position it amuses us to observe the eagerness with which many of bis bono (irid ies aud one-time worshippers sook opportunities to make an oxhibition of their recently acquired enmity. Kicking the carcass of a dead lieu has boon a favorite pastime for a cortain species of animals from time immemorial, but it is still a dangerous amusement unless tho lion is dead boyond resurrection. Soua tor Tillman may not bo exactly a lion, but still, if not thu kiug of beasts in tho political arena, bo is very much Uko a bulldog, and it is almost as dangerous to kick a bulldog ns a lion, as some of these exhibition kickers will learn to their sor row before tho summer is ended. If we aro not very much mistaken Seuator Till man is still very much alivo, practically, and when he has demonstrated this fact in his accustomed brutal and forcible manner tho very OHOS v, ho aro now the most active in kicking the supposed corpse will be so tamed-"so to speak" - that they will bo falling over each other to grovol at tho feet of "our noble teador." If Senator Tillman's defeat do ponds upon tho efforts of the men who aro now decrying him anti making sport of his impotence in State affairs, ho will long remaiu tho senior Senator from South Carolina. Wo trust that a kind Providence will spare us of this genera tion another such campaign as that of 1800 or '02, hut if Tillmanism should ho revived tho lion kickers would bo found contending for placos near tho person of tho grand cyclops of the order.-Sumtor Item. lt is a sin to suffer with backache and pains over the kidneys, when a single doso of Pino-ules will gi vo roliof in ono night. Last Monday night at 12 o'ulook a negro foroed an entrance into a home on the Eastern outskirts of town and dragged the lady of the house to a side room, outraged her and kept her until 4 o'clock this morning. After the negro's departure she went to a neighboring house and told the news. It spread like wildfire, ind a posse was soon saarohing every nook aud corner of the town. At 9.30 Tues day morning tho negro, who went by the name of Pedigreo, was oaptured and taken to the soone of tho orime and immediately ideutified by the lady and several ohildven, who were in the house at the time the orime was committed. Fatal Mine Explosion. Walsenburg, Colo., February 19. An explosion this morning in the Victor Fuel Company's Maitland raine caused the death of at least thirteen rainers, and perhaps sixteen. Seven bodies have br.en recovered. Shortly before 8 Vclock there was an explosion in the part of the Mait land known as the Sunshine, which caused tho earth to tremble for miles around. Soon afterward a man ran out and reported that tho raine was on fire. The explosion caused a fall of rock from the roof, and until this is cleared away it will not be known positively just how many bodies are yet in the mine. The explosion was caused by gas set off by open lamps and the deaths were caused by gasses. Letter to B. R. Moss, Walhalla. Dear Sin There's nothing wo Uko to tacklo so woll as a cheap-paint town.
