C., February 20th, 1900.-Editors Courier: Up to date February has been a lovely month and the farmers are making good uso of tho fair woather preparing their lands for another hugo cotton crop. Already the wagons may be seen hauling guano from the towns and supplies with which to make the crop. Sad evidence that all do not make their necessaries at home, but rely too much on cotton. Tho two bridges across Little river aro being rebuilt and it is to be hoped they will soon be completed. The many friends of Miss Marga ret Hill in this section are rejoiced to hear she is improving and hope that she may Boon be fully restored to health. On Sunday last communion ser vices were held at Old Pickens (Presbyterian) church by Kev. W. F. Strickland, who preached an able and earnest sermon from the text : "The spirit of man is tho lamp of the Lord." Among many other good things he said : "What the sun is to the material world, furnishing light, warmth and life to it, the regenerated spirit of man is to tho spiritual world, reflecting the goodness, mercy and love of God." This was an excellent sermon well fitting the occasion, replete with comforting spiritual advice aud Christian sentiment. Although he had a larger congregation than usual it is to be regretted that more of our people did not hear the reverend gentleman on this occasion. Mr. and Mrs. James Craig and two daughters, who recently moved here from Greenville, were received into the church by letter. This is quite an addition to the church and is en couraging to our devoted minister who has labored so faithfully among us for more than a year. Wo con template reorganizing the Sunday school at this place next Sabbath, for which there is abundant material in this neighborhood. The Sabbath school may be truly regarded as the cradle of the church and it is to be hoped that the parents will realize the vast importance of inculcating upon the youthful mind spiritual truth and of pointing the way to usefulness and happiness on earth and eternal joy among the re deemed in heaven. 1 have read with much pleasure and interest the daring challenge of our true and conscientious represen tative, Hon. E. E. Yerner, to tho domineering Tillman. Mr. Yerner clearly has truth, right, virtue and morality on his side and there aro not Tillmans enough on earth and demons enough in hades to forever crush so righteous a cause. Accord? ?Og to .Mr. Yerner's idea, based upon abundant reliable information, there is in South Carolina an Augean stable ol' immense proportions which must be cleansed, and just as "surely as night follows the day," that "truth is mighty and will prevail," and that God rules the affairs of men and of nations, just so surely in His own good time some Hercules will arise to accomplish the stupendous work and who knows but that E. E. Yer ner, of Oconee county, may be des tined for that glorious purpose? N. B. Cary. It has been definitely decidod to hold the Southern Industrial Expo sition in Atlanta, Ga., in 1910. Two hundred thousand dollars of the five hundred thousand dollars wanted has been subscribed. A charter for the Exposition Company will bo im mediately applied for. Board of Pardons Named by Governor. [The State, Fobrunry 17.] Governor Hoyward last night an nounced the appointment of the board of pardons provided for in tho ar.t re cently parsed at the session of the Gene ral Assembly just endod. The board consiste of H. W. Shaud, of Columbia; Wilson G. Harvey, ol' Charleston, and lt. Mays Cleveland, of (?reen ville. lu selectiug tho board, Governor Hey ward endeavored to securo three men of tho highest standing and character, who aro not actively in politics, and those who know tho three gent lernen consider that he has succeeded in naming such men. Mr. Shand, who is appointed for tho three-year term, is tho recently ro tirod president of the South Carolina State Uar association and no lawyor in the Stato stands highor in the estimation of the profession and tho public at largo. Under the terms of tho act the resident member of the board will be tho secre tary. Mr. Harvey, who is appointed for two years, is president of tho Entorprise Dank of Charleston aud is one of the most progressive and popular youug business mon of that city. Ho has a wide acquaintance throughout tho State. Mr. Cleveland, whoso homo is at Mari etta, in Greonvillo county, is ono of the most substnutial, honorable aud public spirited mon in South Carolina. He is ono of tho largest and most successful farmers in tho up-country and is a mern bor of tho Stato exocutivo committee, of tho Souther Cotton Association, in which organization ho has taken a deep and active interest. Mr. Cleveland formerly represented Greonvillo county in tho Genoral Assembly. Ho got tho one-year torin. Tho board will go into office 80 days after the law is signed, which was done yosterday. The members aro to receive $4 per day for their sorvices whilo in session and their meetings aro limited to 20 days during tho year, so that for such mon as have boon named tho work will bo one purely of houor and patriotism. Tho Govornor is empowered to refer to tho board any petitions for pardon upon which ho desires their rocommendition, but he is not required to do so and ho is not required to follow tho recommenda tions of tho board in granting or refus ing a pardon. As a practical matter, it is not likely that any Governor will in many instances declino to follow tho recommendations of tho board, as tho pardon problem has become more aud moro a burden upon that official within tlie last few years. The Baptists ol South Carolina. The "Summary of Associational Statistics" shows in South Carolina of the white Baptist? : Ordained ministers 444, churches 975, total membership 110,020, baptized last year 5,718, restored 830, excluded 1,413, died 1,017. Total contribu tions for all purposes $349,750 ; value of church property $1,524,486. The Sunday school statistics show 750 Sunday schools, 5,111 officers and teachers, 60,818 pupils, and total money raised $13,017. The table of statistics of the woman's mission so cieties show, societies 846, members 5,530, contributions $16,946. onsumption l| There is no specific for consumption. Fresh air, ex ercise, nourishing food and Scott's Emulsion will come pretty near curing it, if there is anything to build on. Mil lions of people throughout the world are living and in good health on one lung. W From time immemorial the doctors prescribed cod liver oil for consumption. Of course the patient could not take it in its old form, hence it did very little good. They can take SCOTT'S EMULSION and tolerate it for a long time. There is no oil, not excepting butter, so easily digested and absorbed by the system as cod liver oil in the form of Scott's Emulsion, and that is the reason it is so helpful in consumption where its use must be continuous. ?I We will send you a sample free. .J lie sure that thii picture in the form of a libel is on the wrap per of every bottle of Kmulsion you buy. Scott & Bowne Chemists 409 Pearl Street New York 50t. mi ft, all drnggllll Th? Work Of th? General Assembly Columbia, February 20.-Tho General Assembly, vrhioh adjourned Saturday ! night, was expected to deal with three most important matters: Taxation, the; dispensary and biennial sessions. lt did j NOTHING on any oue of the three topics. The record is a blank, perhaps more than a blauk. JuBt for tho moment it may bo well to give the tinale on the dispensary legisla tion. The whole situation is expressed in the trito expression, "Nothing dono." Not a syllable in tho aot in forco when the members came here bas been changed. One proposition to amend the law after another was killed. The House stood to the finish agaiust tho State dispensary, while the Senate, on the other hand, in sisted and persisted that tho Stato dis pensary must stand, and that the thing to do was to purify the State dispensary and not abolish it. As was said, the Hourn would have agroed to almost any reason;, hie proposition that would have contained the abolition of the State dis pensary. It wanted local option, and it voted to that effoot time and again. The Senate, with its forty-one members, blocked everything that was proposed by the House, and persisted in its one idoa that the State dispensary could be puri fied by its bills. Friday night, when the House, by the largest vote recorded, re jected tho Senate bill, practically all hopo of legislation was gone. Some scorned to think that t hore might be something done by the couforonco committees, and if the Senate bad agreed to the proposi tion to abolish the State dispensary aud let tho counties rim tho dispensary, whore they wished, aud kept prohibition in those e.>untios that have it, the way would have boon very clear. Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach tho diseased portion of the ear. There is only ono way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedios. Deafness is caused by au iuilamed con dition of the mucous lining of tho eusta chian tube. When this tubo gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and wbou it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless thu inflammation can bo taken out and this tubo restored to its normal condition, hearing will bo destroyed forever. Nino cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but au inflamed condi tion of the mucous surfaces. We will give one hundred dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot bo cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free. F. J. CHENEY A CO., Proprietors, Toledo, Ohio. Senator Tillman has boon quoted as saying that it was possible in certain cir cumstances that instead for ro-election to succeed himself in the United States Senate that be might run for the office of Governor and make the dispensary ques tion tho issue of tho campaign. We tvust he will do nothing of the kind. Since tho dispensary was first established the Star has boen an advocate of the system, and still thinks that the best so lution of the voxing problem lies in gov ernment cootrol. But we do not think that the liquor question should be made in issue par excellence, an issue so over shadowing that the voter would IOBO light of every other issue, no matter how vital, and of every other qualifica tion of a candidate who may offer for ?ny office.IT But wo have a still stronger reason for hoping that Senator Tillman will not entertain any idea of relinquish ing bi? seat in thc United States Senate ho is one of tho ablest representatives ! that South Carolina has ever had in this august body, and is to-day generally recognized as ono of tho ablest mon there from tho whole South. And, there fore, he owes it to hisJState and to tho South to retain his seat and continue his work in this his greater sphere of use fulness. To-day he is stronger than ho has over been in |South Carolina, and if ho should bc a candidato for tho otlico of (iovernor he would bo elected, but it is af moro imp?rtanos that he remain in Washington than that he should return ' to the Governor's mansion to save tho dispensary. - Marion Star.
