Tho original of tho following privato lettor from Gen. Lee to his son was found at tho Arlington house, and ?B interesting ns illustrat ing a phase in Iiis chnractor : Arlington House, April 5, 1852. My Dear Son : 1 am just in tho not of leaving homo for New Moxico. My fine old regiment lias boen or dored to that distant region, and I must hasten to seo that they are proporly takon caro of. I h,avo but little to add in reply to your letters of March 20, 27 and 28. Your let ters breathe a true spirit of frank ness ; thoy havo givon Vnyself and your mother great pleasure. You must study to bo frank with thc world ; frankness is tho child of honesty and courage. Say what you moan to do on every occasion, and tako it for granted you mean to do right. If a friend asks a favor, you should grant it if it is reasonable ; if not, tell him plainly why you cannot ; you will wrong him and wrong your self by equivocation of any kind. Novcr do a wrong to make a friend or kee]) one ; thc man who requires you to do BO is dearly purchased at a sacrifice. Deal kindly but firmly with all your classmates ; you will lind it the policy which wears best. Above all, do not appear to othors what you arc not* If you have any fault to find with any one, toll him, not others, of what you complain ; there is no more dangerous experi ment than that of undertaking to bo one thing before a man's face and another behind his back. Wo should live, act and say nothing to tho in jury of any one. It is not only best aB a matter of principle, but it ?B the path to peace and honor. In regard to duty, let me in con clusion of this hasty letter, inform you that nearly a hundred years ago there was a day of remarkable gloom and darkness-still known as the dark days-a day when the light of the sun was slowly extinguished as if by an eclipse. Thc Legislature of Connecticut was in session, and as its members saw the unexpected and unaccountable darkness coming on they shared in thc general awo and terror, lt was suggested by many that thc last day-tho day of judg ment-had come. Some ono, in tho consternation of the hour, moved an adjournment. Then there arose an old Puritan legislator, Davenport, of Stamford, who said that if the last day had come ho desired to bo found at his place doing his duty, and therefore moved that candle* he brought in so that thc House could proceed with its duty. There was quietness in that man's mind, thc quietness of heavenly wisdom, an in lloxiblo willingness to obey present duly. Duty, then, is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things like thc old Puritan. You can do no moro ; you should never wish to do less. Never let me and your mother wear one gray bair for any lack of dut)- oh your part. Your affectionate father, R. E. Lee. To G. W. Custis Lee. -? . ^ -- Swallower i Destination. A Olovolandor who made rt trip to Washington says that, much as he was impressed by tho beauty and grandeur of tho national capital and its surroundings, tho thing ho will remember longest was a remark ho heard made by a colored deckhand on one of tho handsome boats that take daily trips up and down the Po tomac. Tho boats stop at many of thc picturesque little Virginia and Mary land river towns that dot the banks of tho historic river and take freight shipments to and from Washingt. rt. One of tho things shipped from one of tho down river tow MM OH the bout the Clevelander rode on, was a goat of tho sort that delights tho average small boy. Tho (/levelander was wandering about tho boat, interested in tho differenccB between tho Poto mac river boat and tho Lake Krio craft with which ho was familiar, when ho noticed thc colored deck hand standing almost motionless be fore tho goat, which was tied to one of tho supports of tho upper deck. He. was scratching bis head and ap parently very much puz/.led. "What's the matter ?" thc Clove lander asked tho deckhand. "Why," answered thc colored man, "de goat done eat up whar ho gwine to." The goat had simply chewed up and swallowed tho tag on which was tho address to which bc was being shipped.-("loveland Leader --'" ' - - - Tho North Atlantic squadron has hoon ordered to charleston ?or tho ox position, Tliis will ho one of tho groat sights of tho show. Spartanburg, S. C., Novotnber 13. -There has been an uprising of students in Clemson Collogo, tho State mechanioal school, tho largest school in the State. Tho boys claim to have been insulted by a professor and th gp trustees seem inclined to ngreo with tho boys. The affair has been suppressed for sovernl days, but WUB given out here to-day by trust worthy men. Prof. W. S. Morrison, toachor of history, is the man against whom tho students rebelled and who is likely to resign. Lately Bomo members of tho senior class considered themselves grossly insulted by tho profossor and ono of them, Cadet Lister, a football player, made demand for an apology, which was refused. A violent quarrol followed. Prof. Morrison reported it to tho faculty and it is claimed ho suppressed part j of tho facts. Lister was suspended. Tho seniors and juniors became very angry and served notico on tho fac ulty of an intention to quit in a body unless Listor was reinstated. It happened that the trustees met about this time and tho students made a showing before that body. Tho trustees assured the boys that tho professor would apologi/.o and that would have to satisfy them for the present. Tho inference is that Mr.. Morrison will resign now that the boys will bo sustained. Prof. Morrison has the reputation of being a very rough and severo disciplinarian nnd has made many enemies among his pupils. Tho Constitutional Con volition of 1805 undertook to correct tho ovils ot special legislation by inserting in tho constitu tion a prohibitory clause, but which has been disregardful at every session of tho Legislature since tho constitution was adopted. Under ono protoxt or another Spooial laws aro enacted to suit tho views of the members from a particular county, or under a general law countios aro ex empted from its provisions. This abuso in legislation has boon carried so far that Hie road law and tho jury law of tho State aro now in jeopardy, and thero is very little doubt that tho Supremo (Join t will decido them tobo unconstitutional. In order to prevent special legislation the laws must, apply uniformly to ovory portion of tliu State, and whatever ob tains in ono county must bo operative in What can bring this about? Of courso the Legislature itself ought to prevent any special legislation, hut tho trouble is that a majority of its momhors have seemed willing to over-ride tho constitu tion and ignoro its mandat es in order to procure tho passago of a favorito moa suro for their respectivo counties. The most certain rcmody for this stato of things is tho oxorcise of tho veto powor Oil tlie part of the Governor, who can defoat almost any special legislation if ho will undertake to apply tho voto impar tially, for when ono bill after another has been forced lo run the gauntlet, tho j legislators will roach the conclusion very speedily that the Covcrnor is right, and the remedy will be eOlcacioun. Much time is lost in appealing to the courts, amt thero is also reason to expect delays ami dil?erences, but a steady application of tho veto will shortly break up tho pernicious practice of special legislation and cause the members to realize tlioir obligation to support and enforce the constitution of tho State.-Greenville Mountaineer. -i .
