In tho Schley court of inquiry last Wednesday Mr. Rayner, counsel for Admiral Sohley, spoke for three hours in defense of his distinguished client, moving tho spectators in tho court room to tears at times, and at times convulsing them with laugh ter by his sarcasm. Nearing the close of his minuto rehearsal of tho evidence Mr. Rayner discussed tho testimony of Heilner and Hodgson, and in this connection ridiculed the chart prepared by tho navigators of the ships in tho' battle. "That navigator's chart," said he, uis a thing of joy forever. It is like thc obliterated epitaph upon an anti quated tombstone. Six navigators met and after three months of unre mitting labor they resolved to give the world a chart of tho battle of Santiago, which, for all purposes of historical accuracy, might as well bo a ohart of tho battle of Thermopylto or the fiold of Waterloo.
