Grant on Hancock. Tho Cincinnati Enquirer publishes an account of a conversation with an old friend rcoontly held by Gen. Grant, during which tho following ocourrod: "Upon being questioned as to tho prospect of tho ensuing canvass, ho rather evaded any dircot ex pression of opinion nt first; but whoa allu sion was tnado to tho military record of Gen. So far hut little practical good has ever been accomplished by any of the temperance organizations of] this State; hut now that public opinion is thoroughly aroused upon the subject ol strong drink, it is hoped that some measures may be adopted for tho protection of society by restricting the uso and sale of intoxicating liquors. Restrictivo ordinances have al ready been passed against the sale of whiskey in several of our towns in tho State, and thc grand jury of nearly every county has spoken out manfully against tho curse of I alcohol. Thc time is propitious for an organized attack along thc whole linc-not a crusade of sing ing women in tho si roots, but a well-directed plan of action to suppress by every legal means a traine which hus done so much to impoverish and degrade the people and has acted as a constant feeder to our jails and penitentiary. This is a cause which should enlist tho sympathy not only of every good Christain, but of every true patriot.-News and Courier.
