Tlie legislature. Wo liovo herotoforo referred to certain mensures of legislation looking to reform end economy, which merit tho prompt atten tion of our law makers. Financial reform is not, howovor, tho only thing that should cn* gogo their nttontion. There are laws on our etatuto hooks that striko at tho moral and eooiul charactor of our pcoplo and threaten to dostroy tho unity and purity of tho family. Wo uro satisfied there is no single creation of ?tho.Radical party which is calculated to work groator and moro irreparable injury to the truo interests of our Stato than tho divorce law. Its poisonous intlucnco has hardly yet touched tho manhood and charactor of our pcoplo. All our habits of thinking were avcrso to tho abominable tiling, and hence timo has been nccossary to make it respectable and lead it into tho walks of thc bettor class of society. Its evil fruits have not yet been matured and harvested, but if it stands on our statuto hooks, how long before divorces in our Stato will beoomo common and fashion0 nblo. Wo look to tho day when lawyers will moko tho obtaining of divorces a specialty and when pcoplo will marry and unmnrry merely for a chango of partners. Tho time may como whon its evil influences will bo littlo less than practical free lovism. Tho unity und indissolubility of tho family is essential to tho highest typo of civilization, and through tho family arc thc education und morality of the rising generation secured. South Carolina for nearly ono hundred years lived wjthout such a law on her statute books, and no .State has produced u grander galaxy of statesmen, soldiers und scholars, nor can any Stato boast of a higher order of morality and integrity than pervaded the masses in South Carolina. Her banks re fleeted tho credit of tho people, und guvo to her money a circulation nt par in every Stato of tho Union. Her position was Bccond lo that of no Stato in tho Union. Tho Mosaic law allowed ol' divorce for ono oause only, and this we regard was abrogated in tho Now Tostamcnt. If u divorce law has no divine sanction wo feel miro it can never got tho approbation of an enlightened public opinion. What has given birth to freo lovism in tho Northwest, and what moro excuses the immoralities of Mormonism than tho easy divorco laws of those State*? Wc hoar of no votaries of these abominable isms in tho South, and divorces in thc South have been either unknown or of difficult attainment. Wo can conccivo of nothing moro likely to breed domestic infelicity botwou persons who would hour and forbear and live happily were their union indissoluble, but who under an easy divorco system criminate und recriminate each other until they separate and soon sock a divorce. Tho present law of two yours abandonment is a premium for domestic brawls aud Reparation. Until it becomes fashionable no one cnn fully appreciate tho evil consequences of this law to society. Lot it bc at once repealed, and as tho constitution pr? vidos for divorce laws to bo enacted by the Legislature, lot u law be passed that adultery alone shall bc a ground for divorce, und this ehnll bo established in open court, and tho fact bo found by a jury. Lot tho law ho snob that tho innocent or suing party nlono can bo divorced, and perhaps thc occurrence of n suit for divorco will bo rare. As to ourselves wc would prefer that thc constitution should he amended so us to pei mit n divorce for no cause .whatever. Tho marital relation bhould bo ontcrod into with caution and with n full knowledge of its responsibilities. This will novcr be dono while divorces can be bought and sold for a few dollars, which in timo will bo thc caso herc, if thc divorce law bo contin ued in force. Wo uro willing in case thc present law bo modified or repealed, that it bo with a proviso that all suits for divorce ponding ut tho pns sago of tho act shall bc tried and determined aooording to tho existing law. Wo think this ?would bo right and just. When partios have nepal ated for tho period of two years ns pro vided in tho act and suit lins been instituted wo think tho snit should bo continued and lite divorco grunted. For tho futuro lot tho mar? ringo tio bo indissoluble under tho laws of South Carolina. 'fi'hu Mai lt (its. Thc Legislature on assembling should turn its attention nt onco to tho reduction of tho expenses of tho government by cutting down salaries and fees of oflieers and abolishing useless olliees. LONOON, October 20.-Tho defeat of tho Turks and thc establishment of a strong Russian forco Wost of Plevna looks liko the beginning of a serious attempt to shut Ghezi Osman in his linc and submit Plevna to a regular scigc. General Qhourko's movement seems to havo been part of a concerted plan. A portion of thc infantry of thc imperial guard crossed thc Vid between Nikopolis and Plevna, passing around Osman's left. General G hour ko'8 cavalry crossed tho upper Yid West of Sortit/., swept the Ordinale road, got in communication with a forco coming from thc Not th, and made n combined attack on thc Turks, who wcro commanded by Hifzi Pasha, tho snino who took tho first convoy into Plevna. The impression prevails that since tho recent rains the Russians, convinced of tho impossibility of wintering in Bulgaria, will make a desperate effort to effect thc re duction of Plevna nod defeat Suleiman Pasha's army before retirement into Rou maiiia becomes necessary. They had gone a short dis tance down the bayou when I hey discovered n yearling about two years old, in tho coils ol' a huge snake.
