All our habits of thinking were avcrso to tho abominable tiling, and hence timo has been nccossary to make it respectable and lead it into tho walks of thc bettor class of society. Its evil fruits have not yet been matured and harvested, but if it stands on our statuto hooks, how long before divorces in our Stato will beoomo common and fashion0 nblo. Wo look to tho day when lawyers will moko tho obtaining of divorces a specialty and when pcoplo will marry and unmnrry merely for a chango of partners. Tho time may como whon its evil influences will bo littlo less than practical free lovism. Tho unity und indissolubility of tho family is essential to tho highest typo of civilization, and through tho family arc thc education und morality of the rising generation secured. South Carolina for nearly ono hundred years lived wjthout such a law on her statute books, and no .State has produced u grander galaxy of statesmen, soldiers und scholars, nor can any Stato boast of a higher order of morality and integrity than pervaded the masses in South Carolina. Her banks re fleeted tho credit of tho people, und guvo to her money a circulation nt par in every Stato of tho Union. Her position was Bccond lo that of no Stato in tho Union. Tho Mosaic law allowed ol' divorce for ono oause only, and this we regard was abrogated in tho Now Tostamcnt. If u divorce law has no divine sanction wo feel miro it can never got tho approbation of an enlightened public opinion. What has given birth to freo lovism in tho Northwest, and what moro excuses the immoralities of Mormonism than tho easy divorco laws of those State*?
