Xi'.tter From Mr- Adams Mr. John Quincy Adams, of ?Massachusetts, hns written thc following letter to un Arkan sas editor who had expressed to him his ap prehension that thc Republic is fast going to destruction : QUINCY, MASS., Juno 5, 1871. DEAR Sm : I cannot pass over, silently, a letter which gratifies ino us much as yours, which I received to duy ; und yet, 1 feel shy of speaking to you or any-citizen of the "mb joct States." I dislike to cum tho retort : ?.Oh, it is very easy to preach ; but, sutler as wo hove and thou toll us how you feel, and we will liston." 1 do try to take it home to myself; and I do not doubt that, in similar circumstances, I should to day bo an "miro peutuntrebel"-sore, angry, beaten and deli out. And, with me, it woutd doubtless have been ns it has been with you, that "thc ten der mercies of reconstruction had been har der to boor than all tho horrors of invasive war." I should have been galled by misgov eminent, robbed by imported knavery of tho pittance which the war h id spared, exasper ated by wilful and persistent misrepresenta tion, und cruelly condemned to hopeless ?tn potence for the imputed guilt of cowardly crimes I nbhorrcd. 1 should have condemn ed, too, to hold my personal liberty at the nod of a mercenary carpet bagger or the whim of a military satrap. I say that 1 fear I should huvo been an ''irreconcilable." In nich a caso I think I should bc sulky, but I know I should be silly if I yielded to the fueling, for whence must my relief come il my last ostutc is not to becotno worse than the first J1 Is there n man outside an asylum who thinks that by such a course thc "lost causo" can bo regained '( Hy whom, thou '{ If by tho North, believe me that thc expri ment of secession hus satisfied us that no cause is worth a civil war. That war has confirmed, beyond a shadow of n turning, thc destiny whioh decreed that there shall bc but one confederated people of the North Ameri can Union. No. Rebellious I might be ; but wci?k enough to await tho resurrection of 8ecce8sion, 1 do not think I could be. You nud I and your friends and neighbors und miuc aro of ono blood ; we were once ?'follow citizens ;" and the old-time kindness must linger yet in spots. Our fathers wen "brethren," and that must count for some thing. Tho whole politic.nl problem of tin future turns upon tho answer to the question '^Shall wo live together as friends or cue mies?" Now, the whole internal policy 0 tho present Administration saj'S war. Re construe!ion meant war ; and the Ku Kilt! bill declared war. This Union is now Indi together by force. Certainly, if this is to b permanent, it would have boen better lo hov parted at first. If the struggle to cist on slavery overthrew the Constitution, whn chunco is liiere for a "freo" Government if tho North is to rule thc South!' Sou tl Carolina is to day thc most shameless pared on Republican institution since Rep?blicai Rome bestrode nil the nations of th ancient world,, put tho sword to th bi throats, stripped them -bare, ?ind then lacke words to laud tho loveliness of liberty. Yo cannot be subject, and we belong free. Th untrammeled exercise of local self govori ment by tho people of thc States is thes. which preserves our whole system. Tnk tliut away and our frame of polity will rapii lyyot into despotism. Therefore it is th? iiotos a part?an n, but wholly ns n fcllow-cit eon, I trust that all thc good citizens of tl seceded States will frankly and honestly ni cept tho revolutionary changes which ha\ boon forced upon the Constitution, and wit them cheerfully adopt tho new relations < amity and political and civil equality towal tho emancipated class which these ohangi involve. And thoroforo 1 nm glad when soe tho noble spirit of your letter porvndin the Southern people as it does, despite tl io dignity of a partisan press; while tl sterling sense of Mr. Yalhindigam has retort cd the Northern Democracy. And it mn tors not what man may bc chosen to lead u so long es his heart in largo enough to h<> his whole count rv : bis soul brave enough embrace a eon tedi vite nS'n brother, and 1 platform wide enough for every A morie oitizcu to stand upon. To compass this ci something of sacrifice is required of us al much of ?elf control isdomnnded of tho Soul You and all I hear assure mc that the atteni will bo made ; and. if made honestly and e.imest, it cannot fail.
