DEAR Sm : I cannot pass over, silently, a
letter which gratifies ino us much as yours,
which I received to duy ; und yet, 1 feel shy
of speaking to you or any-citizen of the "mb
joct States." I dislike to cum tho retort :
?.Oh, it is very easy to preach ; but, sutler as
wo hove and thou toll us how you feel, and
we will liston." 1 do try to take it home to
myself; and I do not doubt that, in similar
circumstances, I should to day bo an "miro
peutuntrebel"-sore, angry, beaten and deli
out. And, with me, it woutd doubtless have
been ns it has been with you, that "thc ten
der mercies of reconstruction had been har
der to boor than all tho horrors of invasive
war." I should have been galled by misgov
eminent, robbed by imported knavery of tho
pittance which the war h id spared, exasper
ated by wilful and persistent misrepresenta

ed, too, to hold my personal liberty at the

of a military satrap. I say that 1 fear I
