XHOMAS DODD, Sr., died at his residence, near Walhalla, on tho 23d ultimo, at 2 o'clock in the morning, of brain fever, after an illness of two days. The de ceased was sixty-thrco y.o^s of ago, and ro speoted by all, for his industrious habits and pious walk in life. Ho had been o consistent member of tho Now Hopo Baptist Church for many yoars, and on tho Sunday previous to his death rendered his last earthly service to his Savior in a happy exhortation to tho congregation of his church. - J3T At the recent sitting of tho Court of Sessions for Greenville county, Andrew Hill, colored, was convicted of the orime of mur* doing Captain Thomas Holtsolaw, of that county, some timo ago. Jadge Orr sentenced Hill to he hung on thc 28th of Octobor. Italy. Tho conquest of Koine, by tho troops of King VICTOR EMANUEL, hus restored to Italy her ancient capital. Its history is thc history of civilization. It, too, has furnished some of the brighest examples of christian faith and fortitude. During tho late war thc catholics thoughout tho South were our firmest friends and ad herents, and Pope Pl VS was the only tempo ral sovereignty which recognized thc Southern Coufodcrucy. The War in Europe Thc military situation in Franco remains comparatively unchanged. Tho negotiations between FAVRE and Count PlSMAROK have failed to terminate in anything indicative of an carly peace. Puris ia reported completely surrounded and isolated from thc outer world, thc only means of communication being by balloons and carrier pigeons. There has been no lighting except occasional contests between the besieged and besiegers for com manding positions. In these little affairs thc French have been generally successful, inflic ting heavy lo^s on the enemy. Thc entire German army in Prance is estimated at six hundred and seventy thousand men, four hundred thousand of whom arc before and around Paris. Thc French forces in Paris are estimated at three hundred thousand. In addition to these and the garrisons of ?Metz and other fortified positions, Gvo new armies arc reported lo be assembling for the national defence, ns follows : Thc army of the North cast, Lille, 75,000 ; tho army of the Loire Tours, 120,000; thc army of Lyons, Lyons 150,000; the nrmy of tho South, Marseilles 200,000. If these figures be accurate, tin condition of France is far from desperate ant thc result by no means certain. War between Russia and Turkey is an nouuecd. The Congressional Canvass Gen. MCKISSICK, the Union Reform can didntc for Congress iu thc Fourth Congress ional District, spoke at Walhalla on Saturda; last. This was thc first appearance of Gen MCKISSICK in our midst, lie was well rc ccived, and made a favorable impression. His speech was sensible and practical. Got MCKISSICK is enthusiastic in thc cause, bal tiing manfully for the success of Reform. Ile has been constantly on thc stump sine his nomination, doing good work where it wa most needed. Ile expressed an earnest d< sire to canvass Goonoo, but will not bc able t do so. Wo trust, however, that our peopl will remember bim ot thc polls on clectio day. If not with us, personally, he is cot staidly and earnestly engaged in makin effective speeches elsewhere in behalf of tb much needed Reform. The Fork Association Was held with New Hope Church, on Sa imlay and Sunday last. Notwithstanding tl: unfavorable weather, a large attendance < pcoplo was present. MCKISSICK delivc ed a Sunday-school address, which was listet cd to with much interest. McKissiok, of Union, thc nom inee for Congress, addressed the meeting in bis usual happy style. His speech wns re ceived with tho greatest enthusiasm-amus ing, instructing and bcncGtting nil. He was followed by Rev. Jonas Byrd, colored, of Charleston, by whom wo think much good was accomplished. Gen. F. N. Gumti then exposed the scheme of thc "Ring" in instilo ting the Land Commission, laying before the meeting u statement of tho transactions in this county. Tho 'Squire enmo down to meet Tonilinson, Wnllncc & Co., for thc pur pose of "vindicating tho truth," but as tho firm failed to meet its engagement, (nothing unusual,) the 'Squire declined to undertake the task alono, und thc very few of our Re publican friends who were present went home sadder if not better men.
