drought of seventy days, a freshet of unpro

Death of an Old Citizen
Another of tho old citizons of our County
has passed away. XHOMAS DODD, Sr., died
at his residence, near Walhalla, on tho 23d
ultimo, at 2 o'clock in the morning, of brain
fever, after an illness of two days. The de
ceased was sixty-thrco y.o^s of ago, and ro
speoted by all, for his industrious habits and
pious walk in life. Ho had been o consistent
member of tho Now Hopo Baptist Church
for many yoars, and on tho Sunday previous
to his death rendered his last earthly service
to his Savior in a happy exhortation to tho
congregation of his church.
- J3T At the recent sitting of tho Court of
Sessions for Greenville county, Andrew Hill,
colored, was convicted of the orime of mur*
doing Captain Thomas Holtsolaw, of that
county, some timo ago. Jadge Orr sentenced
Hill to he hung on thc 28th of Octobor.
Italy.
Tho conquest of Koine, by tho troops of
King VICTOR EMANUEL, hus restored to Italy
her ancient capital. This famous city, tho
cradle of oloquouce, of litcrnturo, of ort, and
of republican liberty, has been thc capital of
tho pupal dominions for eleven hundred years,

archy in Europe and tho temporal power of
tho Pepe. Thc doy watt, when tho kings and
princes of tho civilized world held their sov
ereignties at thc will of tho Pope and suffered
themselves to bo lashed by dirty monks.
Tho Papal Pull made pcaco or war and turn
od the affections of a people ard tho tide of
victory, which way tho hoad of the church
wished. Now tho Popo is left without tom
porul dominion and with no other power than
of a spiritual nature At thc taking of Homo
his territory comprised but a few thousand
acres and some ?ix hundred ihousand subjects.
It is said the occupation of tho city by the
Italian troops was received with great d?mon
strations of joy, thc pcoplo shouting and wei
coining them ns their deliverers from n gall
ing bondage. Old men oud women were
seen embracing the soldiers and cryiug out,

brute, thc Popo, bis priests and bis brigands."
However wo may differ with Catholic doc
trines, everyone must venerate tho church of
Homo. During thc dark ages, it becamo tho
receptacle and preserver of learning and the
arts. Its history is thc history of civilization.
It, too, has furnished some of the brighest
examples of christian faith and fortitude.
During tho late war thc catholics thoughout
tho South were our firmest friends and ad
herents, and Pope Pl VS was the only tempo
ral sovereignty which recognized thc Southern
Coufodcrucy.
The War in Europe
Thc military situation in Franco remains
comparatively unchanged. Tho negotiations
between FAVRE and Count PlSMAROK have
failed to terminate in anything indicative of
an carly peace. Puris ia reported completely
surrounded and isolated from thc outer world,
thc only means of communication being by
balloons and carrier pigeons. There has
been no lighting except occasional contests
between the besieged and besiegers for com
manding positions. In these little affairs thc
French have been generally successful, inflic
ting heavy lo^s on the enemy. Thc entire
German army in Prance is estimated at six
hundred and seventy thousand men, four
hundred thousand of whom arc before and
around Paris. Thc French forces in Paris
are estimated at three hundred thousand. In
addition to these and the garrisons of ?Metz
and other fortified positions, Gvo new armies
arc reported lo be assembling for the national
defence, ns follows : Thc army of the North
cast, Lille, 75,000 ; tho army of the Loire
Tours, 120,000; thc army of Lyons, Lyons
150,000; the nrmy of tho South, Marseilles
200,000. If these figures be accurate, tin
condition of France is far from desperate ant
thc result by no means certain.
War between Russia and Turkey is an
nouuecd.
The Congressional Canvass
Gen. MCKISSICK, the Union Reform can
didntc for Congress iu thc Fourth Congress
ional District, spoke at Walhalla on Saturda;
last. This was thc first appearance of Gen
MCKISSICK in our midst, lie was well rc
ccived, and made a favorable impression.
His speech was sensible and practical. Got
MCKISSICK is enthusiastic in thc cause, bal
tiing manfully for the success of Reform.
Ile has been constantly on thc stump sine
his nomination, doing good work where it wa
most needed. Ile expressed an earnest d<
sire to canvass Goonoo, but will not bc able t
do so. Wo trust, however, that our peopl
will remember bim ot thc polls on clectio
day. If not with us, personally, he is cot
staidly and earnestly engaged in makin
effective speeches elsewhere in behalf of tb
much needed Reform.
The Fork Association
Was held with New Hope Church, on Sa
imlay and Sunday last. Notwithstanding tl:
unfavorable weather, a large attendance <

Association was satisfactorily completed c

o'clock, of Sunday. Gen. MCKISSICK delivc
ed a Sunday-school address, which was listet

Tho letter is bonded Archer, Florida, Sept.
6th, 1870 und signed Rob Gumbrell. Thc
writer is known to many of our old citizens
as having purohuscd his freedom ut the snlo
of Wm. Simpson's estate previous to tho war.
Hu was afterwards sold into slavery by tho
Sheriff and carried to Florida by Ira Gotn
brell. He hus four children in this County,
two of whom live on thc land of Mr. J. R.

These children, we oro told, wore strong
Radicals, but on rending thc letter of their
father, have concluded his udvico to bo good
una will now voto tho Reform ticket. Wo
only wish others could sec their truo interests

MESSRS. EDITORS : A large mid enthusi
astic meeting was held at Vickcnsvillo, on
Tuesday, the 27th instant. The colored
population was well represented, being out
tilmost to n mun. The earnest attention given
to thc speakers evinced plainly (hut thc color
ed man is not satisfied to hoar only Republi
cans spealc.
Geo. I. G. McKissiok, of Union, thc nom
inee for Congress, addressed the meeting in
bis usual happy style. His speech wns re
ceived with tho greatest enthusiasm-amus
ing, instructing and bcncGtting nil. He was
followed by Rev. Jonas Byrd, colored, of
Charleston, by whom wo think much good
was accomplished. Gen. F. N. Gumti then
exposed the scheme of thc "Ring" in instilo
ting the Land Commission, laying before the
meeting u statement of tho transactions in
this county. Your renders will lind this
statement in a communication in another
column.
Thc 'Squire and his inseparable F.s were
astonished and greatly mortified nt the result
of this meeting. They thJWglit the crowd
wns their own. Tho 'Squire enmo down to
meet Tonilinson, Wnllncc & Co., for thc pur
pose of "vindicating tho truth," but as tho
firm failed to meet its engagement, (nothing
unusual,) the 'Squire declined to undertake
the task alono, und thc very few of our Re
publican friends who were present went home
sadder if not better men. Thc meeting was
a decided success-thc discomfiture of the
Radicals completo.
Gen. McKissiok spoke on thc day following,
at Six Milo, to un attentive audience, with
good results. Our people are ?wake. Look
for n heavier majority than ever ut tho com
ing election.

In December, 12th and loth, 1800, Kecsc
& McCully, Real Estate Agents at Anderson
C. H., sold to John R. Cochran.. J. W Har
rison nnd Ii. K. Scott, six tracts of laud,
lying on branches of ?Mile, Six Mile, Todd's
and Prater's Creeks. On thc 9th of May,
1870, J. W. Harrison and R. K. Scott deed
ed their undivided two-thirds in each of these
tracts to John lt. Cochran. On tho 13th of
May, 1870, John R. Cochran deeded tho six
?racts to Robert 0. DeLarge, Land Commis
sioner. Below is given in first column, the
number by which the different tracts are des
ignated; second, tho number of acres in eaoh
