Mater is a free absorber of all (glizing gases, and it is this pow er of absorption that gives to rain water its peculiar influence upon thegrowth of vegetation. In our -iew of agrienitural chemistry. in hation to plait growth, every par ticle of-ammionia or other nitroge ~ous combination tha t escapts into the air from the manure pile is so i ch lost to its fertilizing capacity. Any device by which the "smell" of fermenting manure or compost can be lessened or arrestel is a positive gain to its value. A heavy rain does this by asrigthe am moonia, etc., that otherwise might S escape -into the air, be wafted to other regio'ns and brought down again by showers for the benefit of other crops than the~ ones for whiehi thcey are intended. An eminent physician who de votes his whole attention to diseases of the throat and lungs told us the other day that about three-fourths of all throat diseases would get well by .wearing very loose collars and no neck ties at all. He said that often singers would come to him for throa. dieas and loss of voie, SPOILING llORSEs' FEET.-It is almost impossible to get a horse shod without having the frog Cul away. All veterinary surgeons, all 'hrorsenen, all1 leading bicksmiths agree that the frog should not be paredl on particXe-not even trim meA. No matter how piiable and soft the frog is, cut it away smooth on :Ill sides, and in two days it will be dry and hard as a chip. You might as well cut all the leaves off trees and expect them to Sourish as to pare away. the frog and have a. healthy foot. The rough spongy pirt of the frog is to the foot what leaves are to the tree-the lungs. Never have a red-hot shoe put up on the foot to burn it level. If you can find a blacksmith that is mechanic enough to level the foot without red-hot iron employ him. If you do not think so, try the red hot poker on your finger-nail, and, see how it will effect the growth of that. DANIR -ro: BAD FLOUR. From an investigiation recently con ductedl in Petersburgh, Miel.., into the cauze of the epidemic of cere bru-s; in: imeningitis, wit h which the locality las been aIfflcted du ring the past spring, there appears grou0 fL ascribingl the prevaience of %he discaSc to somne poisons in the food of the people. E:peri ments conducted many years ago showed that grain affected with smut was capable of producing vio lent illness. Ergot of wheat is more active even than ergot of rye. The examining physician, in the present case, reports that the crop of the first-mentioned grain, raised in the vicinity last year, contained much more smut than usual. It is therefore possib'e that the disease is dlue to consumption of bad flour. THE SULPHUIC ACID CURE FOR DIPTHERIA.-Thie Hamilton Specta tor, (South Australia,) publishes de-j tails of the Greathead" cure for Dip theria. The disease is declared by Mr. "Greathead to be of hlydated growth, and tha.t the germs of it float inlg about in certain impure attnces pheres were inhaled by human beings. For a grown person, four drops of Sul phurie acid diluted in three-quarters of a tumbler of water ; with a smaller dose for children. The effect of this treatment was said to be instantaneous: the acid at once des.r,ying the para sites and the patient coughing up the obstruction. The papers have teemed with accounts of sufferers who had re covered in a few minutes by adopting the "Greathead" treatment. Children, almost previously in a dy ing state, were declared to be playing tbout with in ten mi'utes: and at a mnoderete comhputadtioni some forty or fifty of these sudden recoveries have been placed on record with full particulars. Salt seems necessary to the health of all farm animals. They will not eat. too mnuch, if they have access to it all ti:nes. If they are allowed to go without salt for two or three weeks. they will then eat more than is good for them. For swine, mix about two quarts of coal or wood ashes, one pint of salt, and half a pint of sulphur, and let the pigs eat all they will of it. Some times the late sufferer is prompted to momentary laughter by the applica tioni, but the pain has dissappeared. Butter in pots, well surreunded with charcoal, will keep for twelve mouths. Each atom of charcoal can absorb 1,000 times its bulk of deleterious urases. The following mixtxre will destroy flies: Infusiou of quassia, one pint ; brown sugar, four ounces; ground pepper, t wo ounces..
