New dwellings are going up and for the first time in years tegld shops are putting on new sur riiilings in the shape of a neat panel fence. The question of removing the shops to Columbia long ago talked of, we trust is silenced. The music stanfd erected for the Cornets is a pleas ant and conspicuous feature on entering the city. CoMPLAINING.-The inhabitants on the other side of Helena, who fmnd it necessary to visit the city of Newberry, say they frequently are put to inconve nience by the road being blocked up with cars, and that they either have to wait a. considerable time until the road is cleared or make a lengthy detour around. We are requested to call at t.ntion to this and ask Col. Dodamiead, the Superintendent of the road, to) try and make it convenient to leave the crossing at that particular spot open. When c. man is in a hurry to go on and has perhaps a restive horse, it is ex (-e,dig annoyin o ineh forced to Gen. Samuel McGowan, the Conser vative candidate for Congress, will ad dress the people ot Newberry County, at the Court House, on Thursday, Octo ber 29th, at 12 o'clock, M. Let every body come out and hear him. PRESBYTERLUN SYNOD.-The Presby terian Synod of South Carolina, will convene in the town of Ncwberrv, on Wednesday evening, the 21st of Octo ber inst. As this meeting embraces the entire State, the number of delegatcs in attendance will be large. Newberrv Township Tax Payers Union met on Tuesday, and elected the following delegates to the* nominating convention, to be held on the 20th: Messrs. S. Pope, George Johnstone and V. G. Maves, regular dclegates, and J. K. G. Nance, V. T. Tarrant and A. G. Mavbin. additional delegates if the Convention will receive them. Mr. J. S. Hair was elected Township Chair man, and Mr. Gvorge S. lower, Secre tarv. NIPPED IN THE BUD.-An attempt was made by a colored woman on Fri day, on the occasion of the Chamber lain rally, to take from the store of Mr. T. F. Harmon a bolt of homespun and one of calico, but being discovered the theft was nipped in the bud, by the re moval of the cloth from the woman's bag. Some persons think that the wo man was overcome by the persuasive eloquence of the speakers. She repents it now and is sorry in jail. CHEERING.-Theannouncementmade in the advertising columns that a good time is coming for the people of New berry, will cause many a desponding man to look up, and hearts which have been sad and heavy for aye to become light. It is in the power of every man to do something for the general happi ness, but alas, that so few recognize the fact. In this case we feel like hugging the man who promises to lift the bur den from us. He-is a good fellow and deserves well at the hands of the peo ple. Read the card which commences "look to the right and dress," for we can say no more, so much are our feel ings worked upon. THE FoURTH QUARTERLY CONFER ENCE of the Methodist Church of this place, commenced on Friday nightlast, the Rev. I. M. Mood presiding. The attendance at all the meetings-except Saturday morning service-was very good. In the afternoon of Sunday, Mr. Mood addressed the Sunday School after which the School was organized into a Missionary Society, sneetings to be held quarterly. With .this Confer ence now closed, terminates the ap pointments of the Rev. H. M. Mood as Presiding Elder of Cokesbury District, of which Newberry forms a part, and which he has faithfully and efficiently served for the past four years. and wherever in the providence of God he may be sent after the meeting of the next Conference, our best wishes go with him. May he be abundantly bless ed in all his relations in life, and in the end reap eternal life. A MODEL STORE.-Newberry may well be proud of her Jewelry Store, for it is one of the handsomest to be found in any town of her size in the State. It has been completely mneta morphosed, and the original builder would not be able to recognize it at all -so completely has everything been changed and beautified. And not only is a great change apparent in the adorn ment of the store, but in the large addi tions made to the stock, and the taste shown in the display of the various ar ticles, by its energetic and liberal pro prietor, Capt. John F. Speck. When it is remembered that he took up a dead business, and so recently too, the won der is universal that he has succeeded in so marvellous a manner.'- It is not strange, though, for he has the pluck which insures success, and the liberality to back it, and we are gratified to say that he has also the candor to acknowl edge the benefits resulting from a free ue of printer's ink. Success follow him. His stock is large and elegant, and cannot be surpassed. Read his ad vertisement. CHEERING.-Thie number of infant schools in the town of Newberry is a hopeful sign that the population is ra pidly increasing, and that the panic did not have a deleterious effect on the do mestic department. We are rejoiced at this. Whatever the demoralization on 'change, no change has come over the spirit of Newberry's dream in this one peculiar and happy institution. Our baby record is A No. 1, and no other town of its size can show a better one. The future of this part of the country is.safe and our citizens may justly feel proud-and not a few may even feel a little more elevated in being able to make a larger showing than some of their neighbors. We do not advise this however. We were struck the other night-without being badly hurt, however-on hearing an enume ration made of the infant schools, and all of which are attended by a goodly number of little boys and girls, var'ious ly engaged in mastering the elements of education which will fit them for more advanced schools. We are proud of the fathers and mothers of Newberry, who have contributed so much to the good of the country. QEE.-An item comes to us from Jalapa which strikes us as being ahead of the story related last summer of a Icouple of Mollohon chaps, who on starting for home after night forgot to fasten the traces to their buggy, and who did not discover the mistake until several hours after. With all the whip ping and clucking to the horses which they could do, they only progressed by jerks, for the horses being attached by the collars and with heads on fatcing Ithe drivers they could only move back wards. This was a sad tale. The Newberiv HERAI.D is in great demand now among the ladies, because they are anxious to see who has the greatest variety of goods. The first thing they look at after marriage no tices is the advertisements. Out of the entire population of New berry there are only one hundred tem perance men. How is this? .
