I now propose to tell you how made a bale of cotton on one ac of poor land last year; and how saw one ploughing affect a piece cotton. The one which I nade hale of cotton (4-51 lbs.) was po land when I commenced it. T manure used was 40 bushels cottc seed and 200 lbs. Oglethorpe ft tilizer to the acre. I conimenc( on the 14th Ma--laid of rows : feet wide with a large shov plough, and followed in the sar furro- with a long bull tongue deep as the mule could pull it, a then distributed the cotton seed the bottom of the furrow, and tl phosphate immediately on the co ton seed. Then bedded out wi a Brinly plough, running the scc er after the Brinly plough, all t while as deep as the nmle cou pull it-thus making the best effo I could all the way through, at su soiling. I planted the seed ne day, May 15th; opened bed wi small plough, sowed the seed hand without rolling, and cover with a board (the old fashion). in five or six days lid an Cdega stand. I will here add, that cott seed not rolled will come up quic er than rolled seed, unless one b time to let the roled seed lie bulk and heit or sprout. The ec ton after it came up only receiv two ploughings with sweep and t hoe.ings. It was chopped to a sta the first hoeing, leaving 3 or stalks at every 14 inches on t row. .The peice of' cotton I satw much affected by one ploughin was a 3 acre piece planted by nieighbor. The three acres wou average about alike in every spect, and were prepared and plai edl alike, and worked precise alike the first working. But ! fore myineighbor, Mlr. B could ~ around the second time, they bi gotten badly in the grass. He stai od to plough it with a sweep and g aLbout one-third, or one acre of ploughied, when I carne along. 3I lB. said to me, "this grass is * large I cannot conq(uer it with sweep," I remarked, take a tu plongh or shovel, as I had mu, rather kill the cotton by ploughii than for the grass to take it. I acted upon nmy suggestion.s, al ploughed the remaining two aer wvith tuirn-plo'ugh and shovel, ru ning~ round cotton with shovel, mi ploughinig out with turner--ploug lag very deep all the while, there! do you think of that ? Why, jai as I did, that the cotton won tun i yellow, and shed almost eve leaf; but niot so. Mfr. Editor.
