Last Tuesday night an- attempt was made by a party of four prisoners to a break jail, but which fortunately failed. a They were confined in a cell in the third story from which escape had be fore b)en made by burning a hole in e the floor. The hole had been stopped e up insecurely, and with the assistance eof an old hinge which they got. posses sion cf in gge way, they managed to oreopen it. As hut ~one could move at a o time, the first to make the attempt was Geo. Bolandl, a white man. He crawled through the hole and along the bottom foor of the ceiling u;ntil over the pas saeof the second story, when he broke throughi the lattice and plastering inter end addropped to the se1gd story. 'The way was 'thsp plear to the tiist lo,where the Prisoner expected to make egress through the window. The window had preiously not even a shut ter, and several prisoners had made their escape through it, but the County Commissioners had at last been pre vailedj upon to secure it, and thus tl@ prisoner found himself defeated on the eve of victory, the window being strongly fastened.
