AN ATTEMPT TO Bi-EAK dA.o.
Last Tuesday night an- attempt was
made by a party of four prisoners to
a break jail, but which fortunately failed.
a They were confined in a cell in the
third story from which escape had be
fore b)en made by burning a hole in
e the floor. The hole had been stopped
e up insecurely, and with the assistance
eof an old hinge which they got. posses

oreopen it. As hut ~one could move at a
o time, the first to make the attempt was
Geo. Bolandl, a white man. He crawled
through the hole and along the bottom
foor of the ceiling u;ntil over the pas
saeof the second story, when he broke
throughi the lattice and plastering inter
end addropped to the se1gd story.
'The way was 'thsp plear to the tiist
lo,where the Prisoner expected to
make egress through the window. The
window had preiously not even a shut

their escape through it, but the County
Commissioners had at last been pre
vailedj upon to secure it, and thus tl@
prisoner found himself defeated on the
eve of victory, the window being
strongly fastened. The noise made by
