A FEARPUL SToRM.-On Thursday after noon last, be. vween two and three o'cock, I storm of wind, hail, rain, ligh aing and thunder was experienced here such as nevei has been known before. For nearly an how the rain fell in a perfect delu. ., sweepinE over all obsturctions, completely submerging side walks and filling cellars, while the wind, which blew fiercely from almost every poinl of the compass alterna ly, had the effect o making leaks in almost every house in toT. L Some rooms were completely flood, while ir not a few of the stores considerable damage was done to goods. The hail, Io, fell fasi and furiously, while the vivid, shar? light ning caused many a timid one to blanch and tremble. Gardens are riddled, and seamed with ugly gullies, and such vegetation as escaped washingaway, in many instances i flattened down and broken. The greatesl damage and that most to be deplored is the effects of this fearful storm on the plantation crops-on wheat, corn and cotton, beside the irretrivable washing away of freshly plowed lands. It is sad to contemplate. Such an immense fall of rain was never seen in thih section before. During the night it again rained heavily. LcoRREcT.-The Progressive Age is in correct in its report made of the language used by our distinguished fellow-citizen, Matt. Gray, on the occasion referred to in its last issue. If we recollect rightly, - r the itenerant soap-seller had almost deluged Matt. with his peculiar eloquence and paus ing, at the question. "wh-at do you do-why don't you go to work"- * give his bewilder ed victim a chance to open his moa .*; Matt. in maudlin style, said "see dere," pointing to the Iollohon pile and then to the Court House, "I lay dem brick, what you do?" "I sell soap," said the vther, "an article war ranted to cleanse you of some of the dirt which you have allowed to accumulate on your body for ages. You work! Why you lie around for a week at a tne and live on a quart of meal rather than exercise your muscle." At this, Matt. seemed overcome, but whether from effect of the soap peddlar's eloquence, on the last dose of tonic, our re porter is unable to say. This much we will say for Matt, had he felt "ke h;mself he would have gone for the soap man, and it is a pi- he was unable. We don't like * P see forei. ers come here and twit native born ciLzens. SHA.L WE IUvE A BABCoCK?-Imme diately af r the successful handling of the Babcock Fire Extinguisher, by its travelling agent, U. ;or Lacy, two weeks ago, not a few of the cit'- ens of Newberry, who witnessed the pe.'ormanee, were enthusiastic about getting one. A s -anger would have been led ' - think-these Newbe y business men r -e v :de-awake fellows, and it won't be long ere they will have a four wheeled Babcock, to protect them against the rav -es of fire. He could hardly have thought othe .rise. Two weeks have elapsed, and the matter seems to be entirely fergotten. The subject is not men,.oned. Long ago when the necessity of having an apparatus was ad. vised, it was a'iqitted that we ought to have something of the kind, but that a fire engine of the old fashion would not answer, and for that reason no s- p was taken towards it. Now that the Babcock is brought to Cew, the same objections do not exist-and it is admitt -d that one of these machines is the ye..' thing, and yet nothing is done. The Town Council is silent and the ci.'-:ens say nothing. Only a feeble wa'" f. tn Amisokia is heard. Won't somebody speak out. USCr,E JUz,IUs' BaicK RANG.-In our last issue among the i ms of con' mplated improvements, we mentioned that Uncle Jr 'ins proposed, or intended tearing doi' "ro..en row," and erectiug an elegant brick range. The Progressive was "glad ' hear this," but fea. 'ng our statement was given af- r the new fashion, in advance and with out antho 'ty-inte. diewed Uncle Julius on the subject, $ird he not feeling particularly cou- nunicative, answered the ques-'on by saying "he did not know when or "ever he would build." Uncle Julius has lived lox-g enough to know that nothing is eer ' f the best laid plans of "mice and men gang af1 aglay," and that was the idea he wished convey. We s :,te aain then, that the building of such a range isit' nded, and that the brick is even now be-1g made-and would now be all ready but for the sickness of Mr. Chris.an, his partner, and the long continued rains. Uncle Julius says even should he not be spared build, that some one else will, therefore it is only a question of time. The Brick Range will be br'it, and Mr. Cash 1.'11 spread himself in a n :n store, and Uncle Julius we ; st, as well as his amiable and worthy Christian associa' -, will have the pleasure of sunning themselves in front of the s: ne, and receiving the con. gratulations of the' -friends on the successful comple..on of so desirable an end, and the "so. ow" of the Progressive be turned into joy Coua'T.-The Sessions Docket was con~ luded on Sa :rday last after two weeks of unremitting attention and labor, on the pr-t of Judge Moses, Solicie -r Fleming, and the entire Bar, each and all of whom seemed anima- d with a desire )> expedite andfinish the business on hand, and at _the same time to vindicate the majes : of the law. There were fif ;-one cases on this docket, for. three of which were disposed of, leaving only eight-a fact dese.;ring of mentionr. The followir sentences were passed on Sat. urday: The State vs. T. hE. Payuinger-official misconduct-sentence suspended until next term Court; the Sta' .vs. Pastelle Epps, and others-Riot, Sealed Sentence; The Sta' vs. Emma Walker-Grand Larceny-- Six months confinement in the Penitentiary; The State vs. Win. This week the Court is occupied with the Civil Docket. SL.-ar SCHOOr. Car.EBRATION.-The Sabbath School of the Methodist Station Chr ch atthis place, weLare pleased to say, c 'ed ont its programme in a happy man ner. i-,ough the wea 'ier was threatening on Friday night, the audience was large, and the addresses by the Rlevs. Henry Mood and . A. Darby with the music, were all feeling ly approp 'ate. The report of the Supe.'n tendent showed that the school is in a healthy, growing con'-tion, and larger than it is has been for several years, numbering at this time a little over one hun" ed. There was a tridle of disappointment feIt on Sa.tu' day morning by the girls and boys in regard - to the picnic, for the skies were overca.t,and r the winterish aspect altogether put a har to a frolic in the woods. It wuld not do to give it up however, lest tbc good things pre pared should spoil and the bright young Ifaces be dimmed with tears, and Capt. Pifer i being interviewed, kindly consented to put his Academy in order and at the disposal of the merry youngsters. The offer being gladly accepted, the rooms were soon filled, and fun and frolic were the order of the day. The dinner was superb and very well arranged, thanks to the good mothers who laboriously e'd the works and the honors. We bad nearly forgotten a feature in the celebration. and one of the most interesting-a double baptism in honor of the visit of the quondam pastor, Rev. 0. A. Darby. This happy cere mony was pe..'ormed on Sa irday morning in the church, about 9 o'clock, and in which all the children took part by singing two beautiful and appropriate b3 nns. It is a happy congregation which can always fmaish new rec 'its for the Sunday School army and bring them forward on Celebration days for Bap.'sm, and we congra:alate the parents of the little innocents-Clark Ward law Moorman and El'-abeth Louise Tarrant -on their ability to furnish additions at the opportune moment. The thanks of the Superintendent and the School are tendered to Miss Mary Motte for the part so kindly and ably sustained at the organ. ABOUT THE TowN AND COUNTY. If you wish to subscribe for a good paper take the one you are now reading. Mr. Culver, the extensive cooking stove dealer, paid this section a visit on Wednes day last. Business Cards, or duns polite can be printed on the backs of Postal Cards cheap for cash at this office. Have some printed. We are rejoiced to state that our young friend, Jonn I. -nage, is doing remarkably well. It is now -,vo weeks since the opera tion was performed. One of our biggest merchants opened with a five cents sale on Friday mo. jing last, and the next and closing sale of the day was to the amount of 75 ets. Such is l'*e. If you have anything lost, anything to sell, want to buy anything, or have anything of in terest to communicate, make the fact known through the columns of this paper. Don't forget the Odd Fellows' celebration this week-oodles of fun and good things t eat, besides the ladies will be there as thick as leaves in Valambrosa. The weather Is fearfully warm, and the flies are a perfect pla:re. They manifest a per tinacity in s.'eking to a fellow's nose which hardly yields to the most vigorous brushing. The fishing season has opened. A gay party went to Schumpert's mill pond on Wednesday last, and captured oodles, more or less. Positively a fact, an indisputable fact, and a flgh.'ug fact, if any dare dispute it, that M. Nathan & Son, will sell their s' ick of Dry Goods, Clo 'iing, Shoes, &c., at cost, for cash, Fact. "For tricks that are vain, and ways that are mean," we refer to the man who wan' 'd to d."ve us int, the middle of next week, simply because he was asked to settle his subscription account. Have you rheumatism, dyspepsia, or are suffering from an accumulation of bile ? Go to Dr, Bjce and take an Electro Chemical Bath. These baths will even dissipate the blues.. Judicious and pertinacious adver? sising makes ade, as all sensible men knouy The signs of the times are indeed cheering, in spite of certain croakings about the dull. ness. Farmers are attending closely to their planting in' rests, and the crops are reported as good. A favorite spot for the boys to congregate with the noisy games of knees and ti -, is immediate'v under our window. Luckily the season for these, to them interest ing, games, only comes once a year. and then does not last long. The season Is in now. "In saddest when I sing" sang a fellow the other night. We agree with him, it was the saddest sing we ever heard sang. Poor fel low he ought to be "rocked in the cradle of the deep," or be sent "where the woodbine twineth." Business caused us to call on a friend while he we- at breakfast a few days ago. It was a pe.:.ect su.arise how long and vigorously he ate. His excuse when remonstrated with was that he liked it. A few more such men would cause a famine. Mr. Jefferson T. LaMotte, one of the pro prietors of the Columbia Carolinian, was in town on Wednesday last, on business con nected with his paper. We are pleased to say that the Carolinian is gaining largely in subscriptions. Messrs. B. C. Shiver & Co. me':e some interesting mentions in this issue, which it will be well for the rer ter ' pay attention t . Anything in the line of 2 ; goods, besides many other things, can.be obt- 'ned at their house. . We take plearrte in calling the attention of cotton raisers to the card of Messrs. Neb lett & Goodrich, manufacturers of Cotton Gins. Their Gins are highly recommended, and for proof of superior make and adapta bility they can be examined at the Ware room of Messrs. Webb, Jones & Parker, the authorized agen"' for this section of country. The cattle advertised by police department in Columbia through the Hur -.LD, has been claimed and recovered by the rightful oi..hers -Samuel Huggins, Thos. Blair, J. M. LUv ings' n, J. C. Whitman, and a colored woan, all residents of Newberry County. The recove.; of the property is the result of advertising, and is a proof that the Newberry HEAaaLD circulat :s ' -adv antage. We have done so long without money that we are absolutely getting used to it, and but that the habit canr ot wholly be overcome, we would stop all further effort* 'collect any of the filthy stuff. If any one is disposed to settle an account however, we will overcome any repui, hance which may have gro. a upon us, and receive it as an accotr -noda tion. A sunflower stalk about three feet high in a friend's garden 'was accidentally broken about its middle, and the topmost piece hung to the trunk by a small portion of the outer skin. The parts were fit''d t>gether and the wound bound up securely. Strange to say that the sunflower never showed a si, of wilt, rnd is as erect and vigorous as at first. The Hoge School enter' lumens was a suc cess, the progr ame being carried out to the letter. Mr. Morrill, the efficient principal of this school, has worked wonders in training the ideas under his charge how shoot, not only profitably the pupils, but pleasantly and satisfactorily ' - himself, as was evi denced on Tuesday night last. The crowd of visitors gave many proofs of the# ap preiation of the general perfo..nance, not the least of which was a quiet sitting, of over three of the hot'est hours known' ' ,the oldest inhabi'nt, in a jam which could hardly have been tighter or more compact. How Mr. Jillson, tha Sta'2 Superintendent of Educa tion, got through the crowd or with the occasion, we have not beard. His address is ai to hav.e been a capital one. FOR THE IIERALD. BACtIMo's LUNE.S. C , 301li May, 1s7:3. Mu. EDITo1: I have noticed tic piece in the columns of your paper-" Down on Bache lors," and feel the blow so gently given, and icknowledge it a thing richly deserved, but would know if bachelors are not an ins 'tu lion. Is it not essentially necessary that ,here should be bachelors? The world is arge, and it takes many persons to fill it, or ven at least to car. -on the business tran ;actions to be pe: 'ormed in it-then are achelors not useful? Now, to say nothing f how he is used by the "blushing maiden" or gossip, or how be is derided and scorned Dy the sex, to kill any report that they are naking love to h n. Is he not useful fu ma y other ways? How would the coming enerations be supplied with dogs-those enerally known as hounds? What would Iose more fortuna!, men (I mean those that ave homes and families) do for "lackey oys," not sa *ng that bachelors are "catch rs of water and drawers of horses," but omebody has to go + , tot..i, to mill, to the acksmith shop, and to many other places; omebody must look ', your stock; look iround the fences after every wind and rain, Ic., &c.
