A FEARPUL SToRM.-On Thursday after
noon last, be. vween two and three o'cock, I
storm of wind, hail, rain, ligh aing and
thunder was experienced here such as nevei
has been known before. For nearly an how
the rain fell in a perfect delu. ., sweepinE
over all obsturctions, completely submerging
side walks and filling cellars, while the wind,
which blew fiercely from almost every poinl
of the compass alterna ly, had the effect o
making leaks in almost every house in toT. L
Some rooms were completely flood, while ir
not a few of the stores considerable damage
was done to goods. The hail, Io, fell fasi
and furiously, while the vivid, shar? light
ning caused many a timid one to blanch and
tremble. Gardens are riddled, and seamed
with ugly gullies, and such vegetation as
escaped washingaway, in many instances i
flattened down and broken. The greatesl
damage and that most to be deplored is the
effects of this fearful storm on the plantation
crops-on wheat, corn and cotton, beside the
irretrivable washing away of freshly plowed
lands. It is sad to contemplate. Such an
immense fall of rain was never seen in thih
section before. During the night it again
rained heavily.
LcoRREcT.-The Progressive Age is in
correct in its report made of the language
used by our distinguished fellow-citizen,
Matt. Gray, on the occasion referred to in its
last issue. If we recollect rightly, - r the

Matt. with his peculiar eloquence and paus

don't you go to work"- * give his bewilder

in maudlin style, said "see dere," pointing to
the Iollohon pile and then to the Court
House, "I lay dem brick, what you do?" "I

ranted to cleanse you of some of the dirt
which you have allowed to accumulate on
your body for ages. You work! Why you
lie around for a week at a tne and live on a
quart of meal rather than exercise your
muscle." At this, Matt. seemed overcome,
but whether from effect of the soap peddlar's
eloquence, on the last dose of tonic, our re

SHA.L WE IUvE A BABCoCK?-Imme
diately af r the successful handling of the
Babcock Fire Extinguisher, by its travelling
agent, U. ;or Lacy, two weeks ago, not a few
of the cit'- ens of Newberry, who witnessed
the pe.'ormanee, were enthusiastic about
getting one. A s -anger would have been
led ' - think-these Newbe y business men
r -e v :de-awake fellows, and it won't be long
ere they will have a four wheeled Babcock,
to protect them against the rav -es of fire.
He could hardly have thought othe .rise.
Two weeks have elapsed, and the matter
seems to be entirely fergotten. The subject
is not men,.oned. Long ago when the
necessity of having an apparatus was ad.
vised, it was a'iqitted that we ought to have
something of the kind, but that a fire engine
of the old fashion would not answer, and for
that reason no s- p was taken towards it.
Now that the Babcock is brought to Cew,
the same objections do not exist-and it is
admitt -d that one of these machines is the
ye..' thing, and yet nothing is done. The
Town Council is silent and the ci.'-:ens say
nothing. Only a feeble wa'" f. tn Amisokia
is heard. Won't somebody speak out.
USCr,E JUz,IUs' BaicK RANG.-In our
last issue among the i ms of con' mplated
improvements, we mentioned that Uncle
Jr 'ins proposed, or intended tearing doi'
"ro..en row," and erectiug an elegant brick
range. The Progressive was "glad ' hear
this," but fea. 'ng our statement was given
af- r the new fashion, in advance and with
out antho 'ty-inte. diewed Uncle Julius on
the subject, $ird he not feeling particularly
cou- nunicative, answered the ques-'on by
saying "he did not know when or "ever he
would build." Uncle Julius has lived lox-g
enough to know that nothing is eer ' f
the best laid plans of "mice and men gang af1
aglay," and that was the idea he wished
convey. We s :,te aain then, that the
building of such a range isit' nded, and that
the brick is even now be-1g made-and
would now be all ready but for the sickness
of Mr. Chris.an, his partner, and the long
continued rains. Uncle Julius says even
should he not be spared build, that some
one else will, therefore it is only a question
of time. The Brick Range will be br'it, and
Mr. Cash 1.'11 spread himself in a n :n store,
and Uncle Julius we ; st, as well as his
amiable and worthy Christian associa' -, will
have the pleasure of sunning themselves in
front of the s: ne, and receiving the con.
gratulations of the' -friends on the successful
comple..on of so desirable an end, and the
"so. ow" of the Progressive be turned into
joy
