To TEII POST3ASTER-Complaints are made by subscribers of the Herald that they do not get their papers regularly, sometimes not until after calling the second or third time, and sometimes not at ali. Letters are some times misplaced, get into wrong boxes, and are delivered to wrong parties. This causes delay and confusion and occasionilly loss. The attention of the Postmaster is called to this with request that it be looked into and the proper remedy applied. THE WEATUEP-has been extremely varia ble of late, at one time cold and stormy with deluges of rain, and at another mild, balmy and clear, with decided indicatiols of the opening of Spring. The heavy raius have done considerable damage to low lands, and fears are entertain ed as to the safety of the various bridges through the county. Up to this time we have heard of none being carried away, but travel has been much interrupted. GENERAL BVTATIoN-We do not nih to be thought seifish, and that the Herald's new and tastily fitted up reading room is designed especialiy for the convenience and pleasure of the 'lords of creation,' oh no, but that the fairer portion, 'ye ladies,' might a6o have a fitting palce to rest in, and cull the news, and reneiv their supplies in current every day matters. STABBING AFPAIR, AND AN UNT:MELY VISIT.-A German by name of Neilson, in he eillh>y iew: s. W eib, J-us & l'ar ker, at the Tannery yard, in an altercation with a colored man unamed Mose, received, a severe stab in the side. from which it was re ported on Sunday that he had died. A jury of inquest being summoned, repaired to the house of the supposed murdered man, and otu demand to see the body, and making their business kuowtn, were inform:ed that their services were not needed, for the wounded man was alive and perhaps would recover. Mose has fled, we are informed. THE READING RooM.-Our cotemporary is pleased to say in the first issue of the "Age," that he is glad triat we too have become im bued with a "Progressive" spirit like himself and have als.o openied a reading room. Now we beg our "progressive" friend, like a good hunter not to run ahead of, but to keep well in with, the hounds. We acknowledge sor rowfully that we were behind the time, and give the credit honestly that the idea originat ed with him, but we claim that the IIerald made the first mention of its reading room being open to the public. Its only a hair's difference, however, and we need not split it. DEATHS.-We learn that a son of Mr. Charles Teague died quite suddenly on Fri day night last of meningetis. lHe had been at work all the day before, and attended a social party the same eventiag. Mr. D)aniel .Jones, well known as an efficient engineer, and at one time in service of the G. & C. R. R., died at his residence in Helena, on Friday last. IIis death was caused by a complication of dropsy, liver comuplaint and dyspepsia. He leaves a fami ly. He was buried with masonic honors on Monday afternoon at Rosemont Cemetery. BROAD RIvER BRIDGE OUT OF DANGER. -The fears entertained on Monday, lest the Broad River IR. R. Bridge should give way to :he pressure of drift wood and the unpre cedented rise in the river, we are glad to say are relieved. At a late hour in the evening, a fall in the river was noticed, and the only damage as yet ascertained is th at a portion of the bridge has sligh:!y moved. Tihe up passenger train crossed safely, but it was deemed unsafe subsequently to permit any other passage. At this time trains stop on either side. It is hoped the damage will soon be repaired. ALMOST A F1aE.-About 9 o'clock Friday night a bright blaze issuing from a chimney of a room occnpied by Dr. Abney, and over the store of Messrs. McFall & Pool, caused no little alarm. All available precautions were taken to prevent its spread, and after a short time the foul flue burnt out. There is no reason for chimneys taking fire, for the remedy is simple-it only being neces sary to clean them out-and as serIous fires are known to have occurred from neglect of this precaution, we snggest that our Town Coneil pass an ordinance which shall make it obligatory on householders to keep their chimneys clean, to which a penalty shall atach in case of on.e catchiug other than in wet weather. TUE PROTnACTED MEETING going on in the Methodist Church of this town is now in its thiId week, and we are gratified in being able to state that a gracious time is experienc ed, and the pastor, Rev. Manning Brown, greatly encouraged in his labor, not only by the interest and feeling manifested by the membership of his own church and congre gation, but by those of the otner various de. nominations, lHe has been largely assisted by the Revs. Shuford and Dantzler of the circuit, and the Revs, Mickle, Stout and Kuhns of the Presbyterian, Baptist and Lutheran Churches, respectively. Many pen itents have thu-s far been led by the spirit to plead for pardon, and one has joined the church. The meeting will contir:ue during this week, and other ministers are expected to take part in it. THE MYSTERIOUS PAI,E IIORSE.-Wete we superstitious some trepidation might be felt by reason of the visits of a grey horse, which is continually being brought to out gate. Two weeks ago, about bed-time, a rappng at the back gate was heard, followed by a voice, which said, "I've brought yout horse home." It was a grey one, but nol ors, and as we kept no public stable, it wat not admitted. On Thursday morning last just at dawn, a halloo w as heard at the samnt gate, and a voice cried, "I've brought youa V-P- - .- .4 horse; it was not admitted. If there is any joke -i the inat:cr, we higly apprecia:e i. If this grey horse is the shade of some dk parted animal which desires to communica c with our grey horse, Robt. Lee, we would gladly accommodate him, but we have nc means of ascertair.'ag this. Let him come %.gain. It is passing strange, does everybody know we own a horse, a grey horse, and is il reasonable that every stray gray horse is the editor's horse. We are led to believe thai this is a Progru-ssive Age indeed. AGREEA"LY DISAPPOINTED-A package received through mail on Thursday last, mirked g:ass, and re4embling somewhat a junk bottle in shape, excited the thought that some joker had sent us a mixture for the liver, or a bottle of plain juice to place n our new reading room for the benefit of those who love to 'smile.' We were rejoiced to Lay, however. that the package when un .olded revealed a weil selected assortment of :hoice garden seeds, instead of a bottle, an that the favor came from our particular riend, Dr. E.
