What General Donn Piatt thinks of Horace. A "Rural Writer," who edits a Grant Organ in the interior of Ohio, yesterday encountered D. .P. on Fourth street, and gave him the Grand Hailing Sign of Radical Distress as thus: "Colonel, ' we shall have rare sport now. The convention was the broadest joke, the most roar - ing farce of the season. WLy, I fear we shall all laugh ourselves to death. Greeley is an educated idiot-it raging lunatic-honest, perhaps, but intolerably stupid." Whereupon D. P. said: "It may be a joke, sir, but it is one at which tha administration cannot laugh. The ticket nominated to day will be elected. The man who can look into the face of, Grant, and afte'rward accuse Hor ace Greeley of lack of sense, must himself possess unlimited capacity for stupidity Grant is the most inconceivable idiot, and the most cold-blooded, infamous, heartless hog that God Almighty ever set on end. Even his tools in Wash ington, who obey his behests and do his dirty work, loathe and abhor him. A man not accustomed to meet him frequently does not appreciate, neither can he con eeive the depth and degrada tion of his meanness. If, as you say, Greeley is a lunatic and an idiot, he will of course rec.eive the support of all the idiots and iun a tics in the country- -d they are by no means incona.derable in number. He will get the votes of all the negroes in the country and all the whites of the South. We know him to be honest, and he will get the votes of all honest men. In short, sir, he will get the votes or everybody except bhe office-' holders and the editors of county printing, and, unless I am very much deceivec', they will be howl ing for him in less than three months. The very alleged absur dity of his nomination will be a * strong point in his favor. for you see the Americans are a very absurd people. So his election is inevitable.'' And the Donn passed on.
