What General Donn Piatt
thinks of Horace.
A "Rural Writer," who edits a
Grant Organ in the interior of Ohio,
yesterday encountered D. .P. on
Fourth street, and gave him the
Grand Hailing Sign of Radical
Distress as thus:
"Colonel, ' we shall have rare
sport now. The convention was
the broadest joke, the most roar
- ing farce of the season. WLy, I
fear we shall all laugh ourselves
to death. Greeley is an educated
idiot-it raging lunatic-honest,
perhaps, but intolerably stupid."
Whereupon D. P. said: "It
may be a joke, sir, but it is one at
which tha administration cannot
laugh. The ticket nominated to
day will be elected. The man
who can look into the face of,
Grant, and afte'rward accuse Hor
ace Greeley of lack of sense, must
himself possess unlimited capacity
for stupidity Grant is the most
inconceivable idiot, and the most
cold-blooded, infamous, heartless
hog that God Almighty ever set
on end. Even his tools in Wash
ington, who obey his behests and
do his dirty work, loathe and
abhor him. A man not accustomed
to meet him frequently does not
appreciate, neither can he con
eeive the depth and degrada
tion of his meanness. If, as you
say, Greeley is a lunatic and an
idiot, he will of course rec.eive the
support of all the idiots and iun a
tics in the country- -d they are
by no means incona.derable in
number. He will get the votes
of all the negroes in the country
and all the whites of the South.
We know him to be honest, and he
will get the votes of all honest men.
In short, sir, he will get the votes
or everybody except bhe office-'
holders and the editors of county
printing, and, unless I am very
much deceivec', they will be howl
ing for him in less than three
months. The very alleged absur
dity of his nomination will be a
* strong point in his favor. for you
see the Americans are a very
absurd people. So his election is
inevitable.''

neat) represented a temple in gray and
white with green foliage round about. Sit
ting on a bank with a Grecian matron

book on her knee. ThiA infant sec ool

shoulders. The side seams in the back
took off the scholar's hind leg and trimmings
and most all the temple. Awful muuiiationi
was the result of a sleeve. but the entire
landscape came out all over the skirt.

THE uudersigned have this day entered into co-partnership in the general agency
of the Cotton States Life Insurance Company for South Carolina. Office at Colum

Having established the office for the above Company in Columbia, we invite at
tention to one or two of the advantages offered to them who may desire to effect
insurance on their lives in a safe Home Company:
The Board of Managers at. recent meeting, passed unanimously the following reso
hition
"Resolved, That in view of the fact that there are unusually large sums paid for
Life Insurance, to the Companies of the North and East, which sums, being there
invested, contribute to the enrichment of those sections, whilst our own South is
greatly in need of cash capital to prosecute successfully our Agricultural and Mechani
cal enterprises ; it is ordered, that for the pi,rpose of retaining these sums in our
midst, hereafter a certai:; proportion of the net cash receipts from premiums, amount
ing to not more than 70 per cent. of the same be invested in such manner as may
be in accordance with the regulations of the Company, in those sections from which
the said premiums are attained."

To carry into effect the foregoing Resolution of the Managers, the Company proposes
to establish Boards of Supervisory Trustees in each County and Village in the State, who
will supervise all investtients.
Seventy per cent. of all the NET PREMIUM RECEIPTS, from any locality where
there is a Board of Trusteces, will be returned atnd invested with its Policy Holders ;
thereby making the "Cotton States Life," a IIOME COMPANY to every Policy Holder.
Applications for loans from any locality will be made through its Board of Trustees,
whose approval will secure a loan at moderate rates, and for any period, provided the
collaterals are acceptable by the Directors at the Home Office in Macon, Ga. No safer
inve.atment of the accumulating assets of a Life Company can be made than with its Poli
cy Holders, and the above plan, so liberal and just, is now offered to the people of New
ber-ry. The privilege of usitng a portion oif the Company's assets, is extended to every
one of its Policy Holders. I therefore propose to establish a Board of Trustees here in
Newberry, and at any other point in the District where desirable.
