The paper was looked at, borrowed, and read carefally. The most -intirestlng period in tbe life of A S. is now recorded, and yet from it Is dared his ruin. The glimpse at men and things affordeel in thti'one paper ind.- ed him to sub-scribe but his unfortunate love of money kept him from pay ing In .advance H.e promised to pay soon, in a moment of w*akness we conu, ted ia let him have It on sick, and mark the consequence. For a time all went well; his soul exi, auded und. r the genial it fiuence of his weekly reaui!ng. le looked favorably upon all enterprises pub lie and private which .looked to a promotion of good. The charity' which covereth sin seinmed to be~taking root In him, and al thouth he had given nothing as yet In a, tangible form yet much was expected, and thsus he lived on hej.pity fur a few months. The sequel Is mielancholy. We wanted his sub-cription, and urgently but respectfully requested it; now camne a change, his soul c.allaps-ed, he re-fu-ed to rad, he pined, sick'. ened and died. and we lost him. We sorrow for him that he i, gone, an-I grieve that pava mont was not demand. d in advance, not that we c.are so much for the petty sum of g3, but that be might not have died so soon. Peace to the ashes of A. Sub,ce iber. We hope that this sketch may serve as a warning to others who sometimes desire a paper on time. llelieve us friends, It will not do, .y onur end may be as his. Do not ask us to do so, for thbough not legally responsi'. ble for that man's death. yet we f'eel a moral responibtlity which weighs us down. We dons want your blood on our head. Our ctemporaries of the press will set this to heart and stop a system so fraught wi.h dan ger. _ _ _ Mrx Pic Nic. -The young ladies and misses of the Female Semnary, and there are a perfect bevy of them, and beautiful to look at, too, had a piic-nic frolic at O'Neall's mill, on Bush River, last Friday, and- although the day was not of' the balmiest, the sky being cloudy and the air cool, yet the timo was tixedl aqd the cookies all dune, and the baskets all packed, so who but somne cross graitd old codger of eitsher gerader woulId have dreamed of postponing the affair. It 1., certain that no such thought entered into the imtagination of the young peo pie, nor did a thought of the kind get tto the back part of the heads of the mammas~ arnd an-ities, who fir a week before h,adu bee-n as busy as bees; the first with tibbons and all the little eteet eras which make up the sum of outward adorning, and a hich have so happy an effect on the young tmen, and the other in the no less delightful occupation of mixing.up all those swcets which enter into t.s co)mpoulnd of rakes, pies a' d cutards, the stuffing and haking of tur kies and chickens, and the boiling of juicy hama. A postponement was not to be thought of. A'l things wete ready, public notice had been made and if the weatber proved contrary it was no fault of any .one concerned in the pic-nic. It came off therefore, and commenced with a very charming ride on the cars- to -the scene of frolic, enhanced by ita being a tribute to the.graces and the occasion by that very elever gentleman, lir. Super-; intendent Wemdith, who is te day 6ne j$ -t ottTopular men jn the nogntey. p We say it commenced with a compli mentary ri,le, and we would like to give a description of the whole happy progress of the (lay, of the innorent sports, the happ1v glee, the elegant talde, with its mighty weight and ptofu.,ion of good thing', substantial and sweet, of that boy whose eyes were bigger than his stomach, of tao or three couples who t seemed to he walking for the frst time I in love',t young dream, of aunt -Peggy's coffee, a cup of which it was our good fortune to get, of sister -- 's straw- s berries and that other sisters pine apple and sardire;, all of which we esteetu c but did not have a chance at on accour.t of that boy aforesaid; yes, all these things an'd many others we xould like to give a full desciption of, including Bro. Dick's gloves, one of which had a finger torn off, and the many qute"tions asked a= j sbout the velocipede vs sweetheart, but for the reason that we are stretched in bed, sick and in pain, surrounded by pillows, poultices, pill+ and powders, suffering fronm anoth, r attack of that vile liver. No one but an unchatitable person would under such circumstances I expect wore than we have done, and as tnother spasm is coining, we conclude by saying that the pic-nic was very en joyable, the young ladies beautiful, the manmas charming, the eatables of the very best and most abundant, and the elouds considerate, holding up their sbow er until the whole happy crowd reached some in the afternoon. Its a pity that 4 May comes but once a year. At night the young ladies shook down the cob. rebs from the Academy walls itn a wisd- a ng up frrlic. and thus ended tle pic-nic. 1 T UI OUTUFas CULTVATOr. -The May muniler of the Southern Cultivator has n een received.
