It is certain that "dower," the estate ; for life which the widow acquires at { her husband's death, was not known among the early Saxons. In the laws of King Edmund the widow is directed to be supported wholly out of the personal estate. Dower is generally ascribed to the Normans, but it was first introduced into the feudal system by Emperor Frederick IT., who was contemporary with the English Henry III., "TUout i-Su 4 ? Sold cvfer/wker* Train Robbers In Capital City | During the last 27 months there have been three train robberies on the outskirts of Columbia and one daring holdup within 30 r'iles of that city. Tne three train robberies were all rhe work of "lone bandits," but three men took part in the holdup at Parr Shoals last August when they relieved the cashier of the construction company which is building the big dam of $16,000. Neither the train robbers nor the holdup men have been apprehended. In two of the tram robberies in Columbia the registered mail was looted. The amount secured by the robbers has not been made public by the postoffice authorities. In the latest train robbery in Columbia which occurred Saturday night the bandit chose the express car for his operations. He secured nothing of value, All three of the train robberies have features in common. The two which occurred in December, 1912, and on March 5, 1914, and strikingly similar in all their details. In both instances the robbers boarded the trains at Roysters when they stopped to get block orders. Both robberies happened about 10 o'clock at night. Each of the robbers were masked, held pistols on the mail clerks and took several folders containing registered mail. Both trains were brought to a stop between Royster yards and the union station by a pull on the emergency brake cord by the robbers. Each of the robbers decamped for parts as yet unknown. The similarity of the incidents attendant upon these two robberies suggests, of course, the men who perpetrated them were the same. The suburbs of Columbia are becoming almost as popular resorts for train robbers as the mountains of the West were 40 years ago. WATCH US.
