Drowned In Congaree. Willie Beckham was drowned on Friday afternoon, Jalv 4th, in the river 14 miles below Columbia, near Geiger's mill in Calhoun county. According to reports, Mr. Beckham had been on a fishing expedition along the Congaree for several months, having a camp near the place where he was drowned. He was accompanied by one of his son9 on the trip. While fishing, Mr. Beckbam got out of his batteau and wa9 clinging to the gunwale. He lost hi9 hold and went down, never rising again, according to witnesses. The water was aboul 10 feet deep where he lo9t his life He is survived by three children. He was 42 years old. Willie Beckham resided in the Sandy Ran section of Calhoun county and was considered to be a man ol means. At the November term oi sessions court for Calhoun county he was tried and acquitted on the charge of murder in the killing of H. F. Franck, his stepfather. Mr. Beckham lost bi3 father only four years ago. His father was killed in a runawayaccident while on his way from St. Matthews to his home. While on a fishing expedition at the Emanuel Lown old mill on Lick Fork branch several days ago Messrs. Martin G. Sox and Jefferson Long encountered a monster rattlesnake. In walking near the old mill site Mr. Martin Sox came upon the rattler before he or the snake was aware of each other's presence, but the snake uru tha first tr\ ant Tt mnfio a strilro at Mr. Sox without sounding his rattles, but went wild of his mark. Laurens, July 3.?Associate Justice "Watts, at chambers here today, signed an order requiring the comptroller general to honor a warrant in favor of Fred H. Dominick, for ?1,250, a fee for services in the state bond case. The petition for mandamus was prer sented by Mr. Dominick, who came to Laurens this afternoon for that purpose. America's Banner Engenders A Riot Winnipeg, Man.*, July 4.?The police are searching for the American who precipitated a riot on the main street of the city early today by waving an American flag in the faces of loj al young Canadian boldier3 of King George, who were. arching homeward from the annual encampment. More than 200 citizens participated in the riot which followed the American's shout of "Hurrah for the Anierican Eagle!" Several persons were badly bruised. When commanding officers saw trouble was hear they issued orders to the soldiers to keep to their ranks and only one soldier was implicated in the fracas. He merely ordered the youDg American to discontinue waving the flag. The American had many sympathizers but the police had little trouble in quelling the disturbance. Recently these lots were sold for a total of $135,000. Lightning Bolt Kills Pedestrian Greenville July 3.?W. A. Capps, a motorman in the employ of the Greenville Traction company, was instantly killed by lightning this afternoon as he was passing along the street to his work. The lightning bolt otruck a small tree in a private yard and tore it up, jumped to an adjacent oak, and ran down a branch that oyerhung the sidewalk where the man was walking. Competitive examinations for the award of state scholarships in Clemson college and in the University of South Carolina August 11, according to an announcement by J. E. Swearingen, state superintendent of education. Sixteen scholarships in the normal department of the university are to be filled. At Clemson 71 four-year scholarships and 51 short course agricultural scholarships are to be filled. Vacancies for fouryear scholarships exist in 32 counties and vacancies for one-year scholarships exist in each of the 44 counties. Identity is Discovered. Lake City.?The identity of the man who died here several days ago from the effects of injuries sustained, it |is supposed, by falling from a train about a mile south of here, has been discovered as a result of the articles published in the papers on Sunday and Monday. His name was Chester Calhoun Wilson, recently in the employ of H. J. McLarin, of Sumter, S. C., as a carpenter.
