Take No Substitute. Top-Dressing. Results obtained at the South Carolina Experiment Station show that a top-dressing with nitrate of soda gives good results on cotton, corn and small grains. The increase is most marked during a wet year because this nitrogen is abroad / in an immediately avail able form, while the rotting of the organic sources doe3 not Droceed as rapidly as usual on account of the excess , of moisture in the soil. The amount to apply per acre varies according to the fertility of the soil and the previous fertilization, but we would suggest from fifty pounds per acre on poor land up, acording to the fertility of the soil. Early applications are coming into favor. We recommend that the soda be applied to corn when it is between knee and waist high, to cotton just as the shapes begin to form, and to small grain iu March. Care should be taken not to sow nitrate of soda on wet plants, because it is likeiy to scald them. It is best to apply it just after a rain when the moisture has dried off the leaves of the plants, then cultivate with a mulch forming implement as soon as the ground is dry enough to plow. T. E. May 29.?Supplementing the active campaign it is carrying on for the promotion of the live stock industry in the South, the Southern Railway Company has issued a booklet containing much valuable information on the selection and raising of horses, mules, cattle, sheep and hogs, which will be distributed among the farmers of the South. This booklet was prepared by F. L. Word, live stock agent of the Southern Railway with headquarters in Atlanta who for the past year has been endeavoring to interest farmers all over the South in raising more live stock. County and state fairs and live stock associations are suggested as good mean9 for creating rivalry among farmers of different counties and allowing them splendid opportunity to see and study the be9t types ana breeds. Mr. Word will gladly assist any farmer living along the lines of the Southern Railway in improving the character and increasing the production of domestic animals on the farm, his services being without charge. The booklet will be sent to anyone addressing him. There is no real need of anyone being troubled with constipation. Chamberlain's Tablets will cause an agreeable, movement of the bowels without anv unpleasant effect. Give them a trial. For sale by all dealers.
