Trousdale, balked the robbery of a Southern Pacific train near Sanderson early today, when he trapped two highwaymen who had held up the train, and killed them. The robbers'boarded the train, No. 9, westbound, a few miles east of Sanderson. The mail and express cars and the locomotive were detached I from the passenger coaches. Then i the engineer, under cover of the robbers' guns, was compelled to run the two or three coaches ahead of the remainder of the train. One of the robbers took the express messenger, Trousdale, back to the tram and kept him under guard, while the other robber covered the crew in the cars ahead and started to rifie the safe and express boxes. n-iio eoirl Iiqvp nnrnlnvprt f.hp llUUOUUig AO 0UAV* VV ? Washington, March 18.?In the la9t hours of the debate on the agricultural appropriation bill, the provision for the drainage survey work of the department of agriculture, in which Southern South Carolina is very much interested, was saved b}' the energetic work of Representative Lever. The section was at first turned down by a yea and nay yote, but Mr. Le\er demanded a count by tellers, and the result was the retention of the section by a majority of one, the vote being j An * * A1 "xv uv n. I California Bill Defeated. I To-day Mr. Levei made the mc.st; effective speech in the long debate i which ended in the overwhelming de- ! feat of the bill of Representative Ra-! ker, of California, to relieve the Hydro-Electric Company, of that State, from the burden of the statutes applying to other companies using the public domain, and requiring these companies to operate under permit, regulation and annual payment of fees to the government. Mr. Lever argued i that this effort of the California company was a covert attempt to set a precedent, through which in the future all power development companies would claim the right to use the pub- j lie domain without regulation and without the payment of fees. Receives S40 Telegram. The South Carolina member spoke for a half an hour with great earnestness and received mtich applause. An interesting incident of Representative Lever's speech was his citation of the fact that among the great numbers of telegrams and letters lie had received urging him not to oppose the Raker bill, was a telegram, 800 words long, costing ?10 to send, which came from a city 3,500 miles away from the terri tory in which the Hydro-Electric Company, of California, operates. He said that when a $40 telegram was sent from a place 3,500 miles away in the interest of a measure relieving somebody of a payment of $75 a year, there must be something more in the matter than what appeared on the face of it. Representatives Cooper and Kopp, of Wisconsin, and Mr. Raker himself asked Mr. Lever to aay who had sent the telegram and the South Carolinian stated that it came from F. W. Wagener & Co., of Charleston, one of the mcst prominent commercial firms in his State. The speaker disavowed aDV feeling against the Wagener Company and said that he made use of their telegram, merely as an illustration of his argument.
