Miss Eva Chambers, a young school teacher, was shot and killed near her scno 1, at Lockett's store, in Roanoke County, Virginia, on Wednesday by Joshua Raines. Later he shoe and wounded Charles Day, one of his neighbors. Raines then surrendered himself ro the police antinomies at Salem. The killing is said to haye been the result of ? suit f-?r slander against Mrs. Raines, filed several days ago by Miss Chambers. . The contention is substantiated by a statement reported to have been made by Raines, to the effect that he went to see Miss Chambers, walked about a hundred yards with her aDd tried to . get her to dismiss the suit; and when she ref eed he shot her. The slander suit was instituted after Mrs. Raines had... attempted to oust Miss Chambers as teacher. It was thep that Mrs.- Raines is alleged to have circulated reports reflrcting on Miss Chamber-s's character. Raines was taken, .to ' Pulaski and lodged in jail as a orecautionary measurtho Jalge feariig a lyhciiag. Raines's, only m >tive for a: tempting t ikiil Charles 0a\ was because of ihe int re-t that Day had taken in Miss j Cnambe s The grudge that Rain- s 1 h Id against the young woman began when she left his home as a boarder and took up her residence with Day ard his -wife.
