Convention at Georgetown. To the Editor of The Disoatch: The veterans of the W. C. T. U. pronounced the Georgetown convention in the lead of any ever held, and, indeed to those who were just initiated pronounced it as being carried through in the most instructive and / interesting manner. It was called to order at 9 o'clock Friday ^morning by Hrt. Sprott, the state president, who makes a most efficient officer. Their annual hymn is "Give to the Winds Thy Fears." Mrs. Wait held a parlimentary drill, which showed the beauty of having our meetings conducted on such a plan. At noontide Mrs. Lena Smith held the memorial services. She made a touching prayer for the family of Prof. Haynes and others who were called to give np friends and relatives for a higher promotion. On Friday afternoon we heard the president's annual address. It was f written by a hand that showed she was master of the situation. At the lose Mrs. Atkins had the delegates to give the White Ribbon salute to Mrs. Sprott. I did not attend the Friday evening session on account of the ?inclement weather. Saturday morning Miss Bessie Black * made her annual address as president of the L. T. L. Miss Black's health is not good, bnt it is hoped that she will find conditions such that she will be able to hold her position. Several children from "White Point and Georgetown sang temperance songs. At different times daring the meeting telegrams were sent to other States then in session, showing that they are trying to "Wind the Ribbon around the Nation." Saturday evening there was a contest both in music and oratory under the direction of Mrs. Smith. Sunday evening we listened to a masterly effort by Dr. S. C. Mitchell, from the text "If tbe eating of meat mak-^s my brother to offend, I will eat no more meat while the world stands." At this meeting the climax of the W. O. T. U convention was reached vhen it was declared that Mrs. Atkin's address on Esther the finest eyer made by a woman. The State officers were elected on Monday morning and in the afternoon the delegates enjoyed a boat ride At the evening service the superintendents of the different departments told of their work, and at the close we sang "God be with you 'till we meet again." Twenty-two teachers took the regular teachers' examination before County Superintendent of Education Martin on Friday. Of this number four were negroes?two men and two women. Mathias has gone to Lakeland, Fla., where he will reside in the future. Mrs. C. L. Sox has returned to her home in Columbia, after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Caughman. Mrs. J. J. Lown continues very ill. On Thursday, September 22, Mr. J. S. Dooley celebrated hi8 o7th birthday by haviDg a family reunion. Besides the members of his own family, there were several others present. W. P. Steele, the photographer, was present and made photographs of those present. The R.' F. D. carrier arrived at the dinner hour and, by previous invitation, stopped to partake of an excellent dinner. The table was heavy laden with the best of eatables. With regret the carrier could stay only long enough to partake of the dinner. Before closing I wish to thank those of my patrons who have so kindly |remembered me during the past summer by giving me nice fruits and melons. I assure them that their thoughtfulness was appreciated. Ansel has ordered a special term of court for the trial of the several prisoners now in jail, charged with the murder of Paul A. Williams on the circus train on the night of Oct. 2nd.
