The Lexington Dispatch Wednesday, June 8,1910. G M. Harman, Editor and Publisher D. R. Haltiwanger, Assistant Editor Entered at toe Post Office at Lexington S. C., as second class matter. ~ CIRCULATION 2.32<. Jtr ree jjriugea^ lb begins to look like tfce bridge; over the Broad and Oongaree river; are soon to be freed. This propositioi has been before the people of Colum t)ia for a long time and those at th< head of the move have been eontin oally f ammering away on the ques tion. It now look9 litre their effo.t; re to be rewarded. The Chamber of Commerce, whicl bas had so much to do with the rapic . growth of Colombia, is pushing the matter. Ac a meeting of the chambei held on la9t Wednesday night, th< committee, who has had the work ir . charge, made its report. We take the followiug from The State of last . Thursday: "The committee on free bridges reported, through Christie Benet, thai the Colombia Mills Cjmpany had subscribed $200 to assist the work of the committee to get the freeholders o! Columbia township to sign a petition for an election on tne maimer ui providing for the purchase cf the rivei bridges leading into Columbia. Mr. Benet reported that there are in rouud numbers about 3,000 freeholders or property owners in the township. Within the last two weeks there have been 459 additional namej signed, and the total to date is 1,444. The committee wishes to add at least 200 names, as that the petition will not fall short of the required number when the county commissioners c.iecb over the names on the petition. Mr. Bsnet stated that 80 per cent, of the persons approached had readily signed the petitions. The sentiment of the voters at large?as disti gui-hed from the freeholders?is ab >ut 75 per cent; favorable to the proposition to buy the present bridges or to baiid new ones if reasonable prices can not be had on the Congaree and Broad river bridges. The committee on free bridges of which Jno. D Frost is chairman, was directed to continue the Work and a* soon as they thi >k suitable to fils with the county commissioners a petition for the election on the qnesti. n of issuing bonds to "free'' the bridges of toll. The greatest trouble, said Mr. B<met aiid Mr. Frost, is to keep the list clear Of all names but those of freeholders. The sentiment is so generally favorable that many per; o is who* do rot own real estate wish to sign the p< tition for an election merely to show eitatw owmnaflir n-il h f.hp TTlftVPITlSnt. iUVI 4 oj lU^/MVUJ ?? * W?* VM w ? ? , it makes the work more diffieul . The committee ha3 a card index system Riving the name of every property holder in the county, and those who have been approached by the canvassers are recorded in the manner in which they responded." It will be seen from the above that Colombia has taken definite action. It is now up to Lexington to do htr ya^t. and the people are willii g to set. The Lexington delegation has intormed us that they are willing to meet with tie Columbia Chamber of Commerce ani all parties concerned, to discus i the matter and de"vi9e some puu whereby Lexington may do her part. This should set at case the feeling of unrest among our people, for the freeing of these bridges seems to be the chief grounds upon which our peopl want to annex to Richland. Now, let all concerned get together snd take some definite steps at once. There has been enough talk about the matter to free a thousand bridges. "We have wasted column after < oluran of piiiter's ink. The people want some action taken, and the matter should not be delayed farther. Get together, gentlemen. Must Ma at Tann's wwww <?w - ? rr ? If they are not going to . do this, it is needless to put the coun. ty to the expense and trouble of bring. ing jurors and witnesses here. While , it is conceded that this is a busy sea\ son with the farmers; yet we dare say j that with but few exceptions, every juror will have arranged his affairs at . home before leaving to be away for j the entire week. It will be better to j 5 have a second week conrt and dispose . of as much business as possible rather , than let the cases continue to pile up , on the already crowded dockets. We ( are satisfied that our attorneys will see the necessity of this and keep the j machinery of the court running. Marshall Bridgss.
